I tried playing my first DTS encoded DVD tonight, actually it was DTS-ES 6.1, and I couldn't get any sound when I set the DVD audio setup to DTS-ES. It do get sound when I set it to DD 5.1, it works fine.

When I change it to DTS-ES, it displays DTS on my DVD player, but it stays on dolby digital on the receiver. I tried changing the "digital input" function on the receiver from auto to DTS and that didn't help. Still no sound.

My DVD player is connected with a fiber optic cable, and it is DTS capable (although it doesn't say it is DTS-ES) The dvd disk audio setup menu gives me the choice of DD 5.1 or DTS-ES 6.1.

Is it possible that the DVD player won't pass a DTS-ES signal, only a DTS signal? It is strange because my setup works fine for for dolby digital. Please help.

No. The DVD player simply passes the DTS (or DTS-ES) digital stream to the receiver. The receiver decodes the stream, and should output DTS-ES.

So, Houston, we have a problem.

It seems to me you've already taken the proper steps on this problem.

The DVD is playing the stream (DTS light on player).

The cable is working (DD works).

The receiver setting is correct (you even tried forcing DTS).

What's left? Mislabelled DVD?

What DVD are you using? Maybe I already have it and could try it tonight.

edit: just for kicks, go into your DVD players basic setup menu and see that everything is OK.

It works! I did need to go into the DVD player setup menu. There was a somewhat hidden audio setup menu that was not listed in the users manual. I found that the factory default settings had DD on, and DTS was off. I changed it so that both are now on. I can't imagine why there would be a need to ever turn them off? It was strange because even when DTS was off in the DVD player setup, the display would still show DTS if I selected it on the DVD disk menu.

Anyway, thanks for your help!
