No HDMI input - Will Optical Audio wok?

1254 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  BIslander
My Onkyo 696 receiver does not have HDMI inputs/outputs, but it does have optical audio inputs supporting 5.1.

If get an HDTV with an optical audio out (if they exist) and feed the TV cable and DVD through it's HDMI inputs, can I use the TV's possible optical audio out to send the Onkyo 5.1 through it's available optical audio input (and improve on Pro Logic II for HDTV cable!)?

I know, just buy another receiver with HDMI inputs!

But if I can acheive this with just another optical cable, I will be very happy.

Thanks.

Yes many of the flat screens do have an Optical out (I just bought one today!). But ... from my understanding, the optical out is for the ATSC (High Def from Over The Air) tuners so you can feed the audio from the tuner on the TV to your AVR. I don't think TVs with optical out will take the HDMI (or Analog) audio portion and output this through the optical out.
Eric,

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. Now I wonder if HDTV cable boxes have an optical audio out in addition to the HDMI? If it does, I can hear 5.1 on my old Onkyo!

Guess I will check with my cable company.

Thanks again!

Sending the audio through the TV to your Onkyo receiver is completely unnecessary. You should send the audio via the digital optical outputs directly from your cable box and your DVD player to the Onkyo receiver's optical inputs, thus bypassing your TV as a mere conduit. You will then have DD5.1 capability for each of those two sources. You will simply do your audio switching using the Onkyo receiver.

It's also unlikely to work for DD 5.1 audio. Most TVs only send multichannel audio from their own internal tuners, not from external components. A cable box feed through the TV is likely to come out as stereo PCM, not DD 5.1.

I was under the impression the OP has an HD cable box. If so, then his cable box is likely to have an optical output which can be connected directly to his AVR. If not, then it is likely that it only outputs stereo. My point was that there is no need to feed the audio through the TV at all. If the OP is connecting his cable to his TV with an RF cable, then that's another story.

You are quite correct. It is unnecessary. It also won't even work with most TVs, which was my point.
