My Onkyo 696 receiver does not have HDMI inputs/outputs, but it does have optical audio inputs supporting 5.1.

If get an HDTV with an optical audio out (if they exist) and feed the TV cable and DVD through it's HDMI inputs, can I use the TV's possible optical audio out to send the Onkyo 5.1 through it's available optical audio input (and improve on Pro Logic II for HDTV cable!)?

I know, just buy another receiver with HDMI inputs!

But if I can acheive this with just another optical cable, I will be very happy.

Thanks.

Most (not necessarily all) TVs will only pass that which comes into the TV via their OTA tuners as 5.1 channel audio via their optical outputs. What comes in via HDMI will very most likely be downmixed to 2-channel.

Just connect your devices' audio directly to the receiver via optical or digital coax. You will only be able to pass DD and DTS 5.1, though. You can't pass the newer, higher resolution codecs via optical or coax. If this is a SD DVD player, it will only do DD/DTS5.1, anyway.
