No Left Channel Sound On Turntable

1820 Views 11 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  HarleyRider
I have a pioneer elite sc 35 receiver and a technics sl 23 turntable, everything has been working great and all of a sudden I have no sound from the left channel. I have checked all of my wiring, I switched the phono input left & right cables, right to left & left to right, and still no left channel sound. The left channel works on the tv & blu ray player. I tried using another input on my receiver but come up with no sound at all. I checked all the settings on my receiver input setting. Can someone help me????

If everything else works fine (left/right), the left amp channel is probably fine. If swapping the "phono" cables (left to right) from the TT still presents no signal from the left, then the phono cables and the cartridge are probably fine. So, I'd suspect the left channel phono input of the receiver has a problem. :)

You are probably correct, but why cant I get sound from the cd input on the receiver ?

You didn't mention that. ;)
Could be two problems. How is the CD player connected to the receiver?

EDIT:
Just realized you tried moving TT to the CD input of the receiver.... won't work without a phono preamp.

If when you swapped the inputs and still didn't have any left channel, that would seem to point to the Pioneer's phono pre-amp going bad. Your turntable needs a phone preamp, which is why you didn't hear anything when you plugged it into a different input. The Phono input on your Pioneer has a pre-amp built into it. The other inputs do not.

You have a few options:

1. You could try doing a factory reset, but that will reset everything, and you'll have to go through all the set up again, including rerunning the MCACC calibration (if you you're using MCACC). Before doing that, I'd try just unplugging it and plugging it back in. That should sort of "reboot" things without wiping out all your settings. Emphasis on "should"...
2. Take your Pioneer in for service and have the phone pre-amp checked out.
3. Buy a separate phono pre-amp and use a different input on your Pioneer. This may be a cheaper solution than taking it in for repair if it's out of warranty. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Schiit-Mani-Phono-Preamp-Cartridges/dp/B07P8WYX6N

Are you saying that just because the turntable has a built in preamp that it still wont work on another input ??
I don't think your TT has a built in preamp. If it does, it needs to be activated in order to be used on an input other than "phono" on the receiver.

I have had it over 20 yrs, always worked great on several receivers, it has been totally gone over with new everything and worked great up until now

So are you saying that even though the TT has a built in pre amp, I will need a separate pre amp if I use another input ??

I think we (HarleyRider) are both saying the same.

I am saying your TT does not have a built in pre-amp, which is why you don't hear anything at all when you plug it into another input other than Phono. When you plug it into Phono, you are using the SC-35's phono pre-amp.

When you did your R into L, L into R channel swap test, you still only heard sound out of the right speaker, but not the left, correct? And then when you switched back to R into R and L into L, you still only hear sound from the right speaker, correct? That test confirmed that the turntable is outputting both R and L, so that has to mean that the problem lies within the L input of the Pioneer's phono pre-amp.
