I bought a Marantz SR4001 today mainly because I need component and HDMI switching; better (and more) speakers will be purchased at a later point in time.

Even getting a picture from the HD DVD player or the PS3 was sort of a struggle, but now that I have a picture on the plasma TV, I just can't get the sound to work at all. I'd prefer just using HDMI and not analogue phono cables, or the optical stuff there. I find the engrish manual to be lacking; it's not exactly helping. I'm having a hard time working out the logic of the input setup menu, if it's even here the answer lies.

Can anybody provide some help, please?

I get that odd table with the numbers and the 'digi' and the 'ana' and whatnot. I'll try to disable passthrough. Does that mean the receiver will mess with the video signal, as in scale it? I'd like to avoid that, because untouched 1080i from the HD-E1 and 1080p from the PS3 is where I'd like to keep it.

Damn, seems it worked. But what worries me here is that I disable passthrough under the heading 'VIDEO CONVERT'. I'm using A Scanner Darkly on the HD DVD player now, so I'm not sure if it's messing with the video signal, but I'd really like to avoid that.

And it's some seriously low sound I'm getting. Would you happen to know where I can turn that up?

The Marantz I have seems to remember channel level settings per mode per source. Just crank the channels I suppose.

I read this a lot with Blu-ray and HD-DVD but have never noticed any such thing happening. I am not sure on the volume thing. The pass through mode is to ensure your 1080p signal makes it to the display, but you must then use a different type of digital connection or the analog multi ch inputs. Your sources may only be able to pass 1080i if you are going to use HDMI audio. Not the worst thing in the world, if your display is native 1080p it will de-interlace the 1080i into full 1080p just fine.

My display is actually 1024*768 natively, but I find that 1080p looks just a tiny bit better than 1080i from the PS3. Perhaps my TV likes the progressive signal just a little more. In any case, 1080p is more practical with the PS3.

Where would I crank the channels? I tried going into the 7.1 setup thing and turning the dB's up to 10, but it didn't seem to have an effect.

Yes, btw, I am a TOTAL receiver n00b. This is my first time with such AV equipment, so my problems/questions may seem extremely silly

You're best bet would be to pick up a spl meter at radio shack and calibrate the 4001 properly using its pink noise generator. The 7.1 analog inputs channel levels adjust separately from the global channel levels. Via hdmi, the 4001 only switches the video signal. It only upconverts svideo to component. Also, in the Surround Menu, make sure the "LFE Level" setting is set to 0db for the PS3. When I checked this initially on my 4001, it was set to ***.

Hi. This is a little late, perhaps you already figured-out your SR-5001 vs HDMI cabling problem.

My brief saga with using HDMI was horrible. It was all caused by the damned DRM "Copy Protection" endemic that seems to be "built-into" somehow into present-day HDMI Inputs & Outputs for all products that have HDMI capabilities.

The big insult to me was that I was NOT attempting to copy anything. I was merely trying to "upgrade" to HDMI between TiVo, Marantz SR-5001, Hi-Def flat screen TV.

Long story-Short: I changed my "upgrade" by yanking out the HDMI cables, then I replaced them with Components cable for Video and Optical Toslink for Audio between the TiVo, Marantz SR-5001, and the Hi-Def flat panel TV.

Problems Solved! Looks great and sounds great!! No more HDMI for me, that's for sure. ---John
