Hello. I'm trying to set up some home theater wireless headphones (Sony MDR-DS6500) to my Denon Receiver an AVR-2803 and Samsung TV (UN55F6300).  When I hook up to the TV optical out directly the headphones work fine.  When I hook up to the Optical Output on the Receiver I don't get any sound.  The current connection path is TV --> Receiver Optical Input 4 ---> Receiver Optical Output 4 --->  Headphones.  As per my manual my current understanding is that whatever is input into Opt4 gets output on Opt4 as well. I've read this is for recording devices etc but I'm assuming that the signal can be picked up by anything.

Any help would be great

The optical inputs on the back of the AVR can be assigned. If your AVR is doing audio through it speakers then you have the right assignment for the input optical jack. On page 23 of the owners manual are instructions on how to do it. there is a box of notes at the bottom of the page that I have a felling there is something lost in translation. It states the optical 4 jacks are equipped with a optical out put jack. the s on the word jack would make it multiple. Look at it this way the 4 optical jacks as if all for can be used to out put through opt 4. So I think your problem is in how or where the assignment is. The Specs call for 2 optical outs so I am going to assume one is on the front panel of the AVR, but I fail to find it.

Thanks for the reply. I am unable to find where to assign the optical output jacks.  I have found and correctly assigned the input jack in the normal setup menu.  I have looked in the manual but can't seem to find it anywhere. You mention "page 23", I wonder if we are looking at different manuals because on my manual page 23 shows "Playing the input source". Is this what you are looking at? I'm not sure about you mentioning 2 optical outs. I have a large headphone jack on the front but nothing else and on the back there are 1 optical output but 4 Optical inputs.

The Canadian manual must have different numbers.  I've reset all the Digital In assignments so that tape is not assigned at all. For me Opt 4 has been assigned to TV. That said, I did try selecting tape on the dial and there is no sound.  You suggest trying the other jacks but I've only got one output jack to try which is Opt 4. There is no Opt 1-3 output jack, only input.

thanks again

I moved my optical cable from the tv and tried all four optical inputs. once the optical input was assigned I got sound through my speakers each time but never got anything through the headphones which were still hooked up to the optical out (Opt4).

How about a new cable? Are you using the same cable from the TV to the AVR that you used for the TV to the headphones that worked? Have you tried the analog hookup to see if that works. How about going back to what did work, TV optical out to headphones optical in, with an optical splitter to feed both at once. Last thing to check is the 2nd. optical cable it may not be good, or the plastic caps may still be on, or one stuck in the output port, and the last thing is the optical out put on your AVR may be bad. Check that by putting a cable into the optical output and look at the other end a see if you can see the light, if not the cable or the output is bad. That Denon AVR is long in the tooth so to speck so it may be time to upgrade to one of the new HDMI AVR's. I did the same thing last year and am glad I did. I still have the old Onkyo setting on the floor in my office and if you were just around the corner I'd say come get the thing, I know it works.

Thanks for the reply.  Yes, I'm using the same cable for both applications. I've hooked up the analog and the headphones works fine. (limited to stereo sound of course)  I don't have an optical splitter but yes that could be considered as an alternative.  I'd prefer to run everything through the AVR but if it can't happen so be it.  I checked the cable in the input. There is light coming through it but it's not nearly as bright as when I hook it up to the TV optical output.  My impression is that the signal is no being sent to the optical output as in it hasn't been assigned etc. I realize that it might be as you suggest and the output is damaged but I feel there is no real reason for this.  That output has never been used, no physical damage was ever done, and the protective cap has never even been taken off until now.

I know the AVR is getting old but a new one of similar caliber just isn't in the budget right now.

Again thanks for the help.

can you provide an "assignment" view of exactly what you have assigned in your "digital assignments" ... just like the earlier post which shows the "layout" of the digital assignments "table"? and there is no assignment of the optical output connector as there is only one.... why they label it as optical4 is a mystery at least to me.

Further, your comment about the "light output" is interesting. Is it possible that you are not "clicking" the cable in well enough. If you look at the output at the back of the unit and compare it to the that of the output coming out of the TV (example), do they appear similar? My guess is that the connector isn't seated well or the "click" is blocking the seating.

Still further... have you checked to ensure that your are "recording" the "source"... I think this has to be set otherwise, the output has to be specifically set to a "given source"... this is for recording something else (multi source recording).

Thank you very much. The source for recording was not set. I followed to the manual and it is working beautifully now.  I was confident it needed to be some sort of an assignment issue but just didn't understand where to do it.

Thanks again
