No video from my PS3

My PS3 has been working fine for almost two years. I use it as a DVD/Blu-ray player in my home theater. Today my wife turned it on to watch a DVD and got some message. Of course she can't remember exactly what it was (ugh) but it was something like "do you want to format/change format/???? ______"

I can't figure out what that message would have been, but it was a yes or no thing and she picked "no". When it fires up the first thing it displays is a Ratchet & Clank game that I downloaded onto the hard drive. I can hear the background music for this game playing, so it is working. It syncs with the controller, everything is fine. Except there's nothing on the screen.

So I pulled it out and hooked it up to another TV. Still no video. I'm using component cables for video so I thought maybe that output got turned off or something. So I hooked up the standard cable that comes with it, basic RCA audio/video, and hooked that up. Still no video.

What the hell? I unplugged it totally and left it sitting there. I'm hoping after it's powered down for a while it'll be forced to reset all the video settings when I plug it back in. The only thing I can think of is that it switched the video over to HDMI. I'm using HDMI for audio, but not video. I don't have a TV that accepts HDMI.

Any other ideas?

I think if you turn it on and then hold down the power button (for 5 seconds), it'll beep a few times and "reset" itself back to defaults.

Worth a shot to see if you can get the video back.

I've had that happen with mine, for the opposite way (I have HDMI for video, but not audio) and it'll come up asking me if I want to output everything with HDMI. If I choose "Yes" then I get no sound and have to reset the audio. (of course if I say "no" then I don't get any video). My guess is my wife holds down the power button and resets the stupid thing, so when I power it back up it recognizes that an HDMI cable is plugged in and assume I want to output everything with HDMI.

So that's probably what happened....except your wife probably said "yes" and now it's outputting video through the HDMI (and thus you can't see it). Reset it again.

A minor annoyance, but having to hold down Power for 2 seconds to turn it off, yet 5 seconds resets the whole thing is pretty stupid. Shouldn't be a problem for most people...but my wife is not "most people"

Try holding the power button until it beeps a few times...it should re-set the video to whatever cable type you are using.

edit
ops -i was too slow with the post button.

hope that works for you.

Thanks, that's what it was. She swears she said no to the prompt but obviously that's not what happened. In her defense that whole process is pretty retarded. Reset buttons should be out of the way and hard to press. And don't prompt me to change video settings, if I can read the prompt then IT'S WORKING!! I'll take it from there.

I think I've done it twice.....usually when I eject a disc and I'm trying to multitask and put the disc in the case with one hand and holding down power with the other. If it was just "touch to turn it off" it wouldn't be bad, but it's because you have to hold it down for a second or two to turn it off then release it before it resets that causes the problem. Again, only occassionally.
