I just replaced norton antivirus with Nod32 antivirus software. It's not quite as bloated as norton. Is rated to be just as good. It appears to use less cpu and supposedly scans faster than norton.

I can't confirm all these claims but man is it smooth in its overall execution. The autoupdate of the software and virus definitions is also faster and effortless compared to norton's annoying liveupdate.

Comparing the two programs... I can't think of any major advantages to norton except its firewall support. I can't confirm it is better than Nod32 in this regard anyway.

This is a very interesting topic for me since I am also looking for an alternative to NAV (2003).

I have been running AVG Free Edition for a few weeks in parallel and so far it seems to work. However, I have not had any virus attacks. The update download process with AVG seems to be a bit slow.

Googling for AVG, NOD32, Avast, I came across this post in another forum. (For those who do not believe me that there are really other forums out there just click on the link :D). I take this as just another data point in my search for “best AV softwareâ€.

(For firewall sw I stick with Zonealarm Pro 5.5, and for anti-spyware PestPatrol 4.x and Spybot S&D 1.3)

I would appreciate further comments/recommendations for AV software.

TIA!

I use NOD32 on all my machines. Excellent software for an HTPC because of its limited CPU footprint and its lack of 'incompatibility issues.' I was so glad to get rid of Norton! Blazar's 'not quite as bloated as Norton' would definitely be an understatement! :)

Do you need one license per machine or does one license suffice for all of them?

I didn't try to use one license for multiple machines, so I'm not sure if it would work. I'm not an expert, but anti-virus software is always in touch with the manufacturer for updates, and so would seem harder for one to duplicate a license over several machines- yes, even harder than MS activation procedures. Whether this is valid thinking in regards to Eset (makers of NOD32) or any other AV software company, I do not know. However, if you purchase more than one license, they do charge a lower the price. Also, license renewal is a lower price than the original license ($27.30).

Cheers,
Thanks Rob;

I was more thinking along the lines that if one had the software only running on one machine at a time, one license would be ok. This is possible with some software licenses, while it is not with others, e.g. for XP.

Trend Micro PC-Cillin + Zone Alarm Pro here (NAV is really "bloatware" to me), but NOD32 is a terrific AVP, a very good choice. I like AVG (free edition) and would also recommend PANDA AV as another excellent choice.
