I just saw an article on www.slashdot.org about a set top box that Nokia is developing. The twist that they are putting on it, is that it is a Linux based open platform, with many capabilities. It is reported to include gaming, internet access, digital TV, Tivo-like recording, and more.

It's pretty lean on details, but check out these two articles:

They mention Digital TV support, but no indication if that means OTA, Satellite, HDTV.

Also, here is the site for the Open Source development related to this device.

In their documentation on the site, they give a bunch of content creation tips, and all of the speak only of NTSC and PAL. They specifically say to avoid widescreen requirements. So, they don't seem to have HDTV in mind.

I saw this thing on Tech TV when they were covering the CES 2001 in Las Vegas in January. It won an award for best new video product and looked pretty cool. They didn't say when or if it would be available here in the USA.

Originally when I saw this, they were talking about European digital standards. And if it comes to the States, it most likely only do digital cable. In all their press, they have yet to talk about ATSC HDTV.

I checked out the Nokia website when I saw the Slashdot article. While I didn't see anything about ATSC it does mention a North American release sometime.

I just don't remember the date.

But I think this box is very interesting.
