I just saw an article on www.slashdot.org about a set top box that Nokia is developing. The twist that they are putting on it, is that it is a Linux based open platform, with many capabilities. It is reported to include gaming, internet access, digital TV, Tivo-like recording, and more.
It's pretty lean on details, but check out these two articles:
http://news.ft.com/
http://www.nokia.com/
They mention Digital TV support, but no indication if that means OTA, Satellite, HDTV.
Also, here is the site for the Open Source development related to this device.
http://www.ostdev.net/
In their documentation on the site, they give a bunch of content creation tips, and all of the speak only of NTSC and PAL. They specifically say to avoid widescreen requirements. So, they don't seem to have HDTV in mind.
