Non-Anamorphic Question

420 Views 7 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  RicP
Hello, I have always used cheap dvd players, and I have now saved up money for a new one. I have about $150 to get a new DVD player, and have been reading alot about them. My question is are there any DVD players that will cut off the black bars on Non-Anamorphic widescreen dvds so that I can watch them correctly on my widescreen projector? I am looking for a progressive scan one preferably. Also, are there any 5 disc changers in the category? I saw the Panasonic F87 is cheap, but don't know if it will do that. Thanks!

Some DVD players do have zoom feature that will cut off and zoom in the letter-boxed video. I'm not sure which specific player does that. However, majority of widescreen TVs can also do that with their aspect ratio control.
Thanks for responding, unfortunately my projector doesn't do that, so I have to find a DVD player that will.
The Momitsu V880 has an excellent zoom feature.

The inexpensive Terapin TT-1800 has good zoom quality.

Recent Panasonic DVD players have an interesting zoom function.
Take some time, maybe even spend a little more money, some DVD players "zoom" scaling really stink.
The Zenith DVB-318 has one of the best zoom features for correcting non-anamorphic widescreen DVDs. You can basically zoom independently in each axis, so you just zoom a bit vertically to correct non-anamorphic widescreen DVDs. Best scaling I've seen at least.
Thanks to all for your help, I will look into the DVB-318, but I really don't think I need the upconverting on it, so I really don't need to spend the money for it. Are there any others that are good? Preferably 5-disc changers? Thanks.

I agree completely and I have a Panasonic RP-91, long considered to have the best non-anamorphic scaling of any player. To me the Zenith's vertical only zoom coupled with the 1080i upconvert make it a much better player for non-anamorphic widescreen than the RP-91.

Couple that with the excellent PAL->NTSC conversion and the region-free ability and the 318 is really one hell of a player for
