i am wondering how much longer i can wait to upgrade my dish to get the three HD channels DirecTV offers...but i'm hearing that a lot of 2.35:1 movies are cropped, and that a lot of 4:3 pan and scan HD is shown. Is this true? and if so, how often is this done? I'll probably stick with OTA HD and DVD for now if it's a lot....

If you already have DirecTV I would suggest that you find a good deal on a HD STB and enjoy. Not all in OAR but I for one would not like to do without it.

To answer your question. Yes your info is mostly true. Check the guides for HD content. Most of HBO movies are in HD. Older features are in OAR or close to. Newer transfers are shown in what some (including me) like to call CropoVision. I still enjoy it. Showtime has limited true HD but shows most widescreen movies in OAR. The quality of Showtime upconverts in OAR is debated here on a regular basis. They all kick the stuffing out of 4:3 SDTV you are watching now.
