non-violent surround demos

620 Views 13 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  PULLIAMM
I am looking for some DVD demos that have good use of surround speakers and in general are able to show off a system. I am looking for something I could show kids and something females may enjoy as well. What does that mean...well at the least nothing overly violent and while dynamics are OK I dont want something that is just loud. I am NOT looking for bass demos as I have plenty of ideas for those already.

Some of my ideas:

Pixar movies: Incredibles, Finding Nemo, exc.

Harry Potter quiditch match

House of Flying Daggers-Bean Dance

Other suggestions?

Star Wars I - III multiple scenes with ships flying by, pod race, etc. Some violence but no blood or foul language. Excellent musical score.

Speed - an Imax movie that is popular for surround demos. Shows its age though.

Ray - Excellent musical tracks. Most any performance scene will serve as a good demo.

Pirates of the Carribean - Some mild gore and violence. Nice effects with canons firing etc. The very first scene with the ship creaking in the fog is impressive.

Six days seven nights - a horrible movie but some nice effects as the plane crashes.

If you're into anime at all, Steam boy is very good. Some nice surround effects as he flies around. There is some scenes of war at the end of the film but no blood.

Going through my DVD collection in my head, but most of the good surround sound movies are action movies not so much suitable for children / appreciated by women :) I'd stick to Pixar movies. Toy Story 2 is excellent in that regard.
We just watched Narnia, and the scene where the kids are all running around the house after they break a window, and you can hear the footsteps of the mean lady in the house walking around looking for them- that was very cool, because the footsteps moved all around us in our 7.1 set-up. Very non-violent as well, just kids hiding and footsteps...
Just thought of a couple others, Zathura and Jumanji.
I haven't seen House of Flying Daggers, but it certainly doesn't sound non-violent!

Highly recommended movie, but the scene that was mentioned, is very non-violent
When I was selling a/v gear, I used the first chapter of Toy Story 2 and the "rescusing the princess" scene from Shrek any time kids were around. They're funny, have great surround effects, and are obviously family-friendly.

The scene from The Incredibles where Dash is running from the razor planes is also a good one. There is also a special feature short on disk 2 of Ice Age called "Gone Nutty" that is not bad.
Yes, if that scene in House of Flying Daggers doesn't do it for you, I don't know what will. :)
some good ideas here, I have not seen narnia or zathura so will check those out. Selected parts of star wars will also work well. Any ideas of good scenes for the ladies?
Depends on the lady I suppose. Seems most ladies aren't impressed with demos (or at least claim not to be) but if you sit down and watch a full movie around half-way through they turn to you and say, "wow this really sounds good."

That said...maybe Titanic? ;)
One just occurred to me: Seabiscuit. Great movie, and meets all the criteria.
I don't know if there are multiple versions of Seabiscuit on DVD, but I would agree that is a good demo for sound, but the transfer I have is one of the WORST I've ever seen. The video bitrate is horrendously low.

Odd, the picture on mine looks good. Not exceptional, but as good as most DVDs. Disney usually has good quality-control.
