Thats quite an undertaking trying to build a complete 5.1 setup with no real experience. Do you really have the time and tools and budget for this? Heres a great website for you to buy some kits and build some boxes. Look it over and let us know what your thoughts are...

oh and PS....a couple people will come by immediately after this and post another site that competes with Danny. I'm not sure how it happens but it just does EVERY time I point someone to his site. *LOL* They will point you to zaph audio....just wait and see

I'm not suggesting you can't do better or worse than Gr-Research, I just think its a pretty good place to start and see if DIY suits your budget.

Not sure how John competes with Danny? Danny's business is selling speakers, John's is simply supplying designs for free to anyone who wants to build them. And I'm not sure why you care, people come asking for good diy sites and zaphaudio is one of them.

basically i want to build a 5.1 that sounds good,

Same here, which is why I joined...nearly 2 years ago. Sure, I could have built my system sooner, but my "wants" changed and so I've delayed my build till now.

There's a lot of stuff to learn and understand. Good luck!

how can i figure out how much power 2 8"s, 2 5.5" and a tweet will take?

There are more scientific ways of doing it, but to be absolutly sure, start cranking up the volume until something goes. Replace the weak part and repeat. Keep doing it until you reach the SPL #'s you're looking for

Leave it to someone from Topeka to come up with this fool proof procedure.

where is one to go to start to learn every thing about speakers from a noob stand point?

Read Vance Dickason's Loudspeaker Design Cookbook, Siegfried Linkwitz's web-site ( http://www.linkwitzlab.com ), and John K's website ( http://www.musicanddesign.com ),. Earl Geddes has done some interesting work on wave guides and has a sub-bass concept. Tom Danley's Unity Sumation aperture is interesting too.

Realize that 95% of the speakers out there suffer from the same flawed physics and build something better or settle for something conventional.

Depending on your inclination (do you want good speakers in a a month or three, or do you want to spend years on the hobby?) either start building or start designing.
