NOOB question about copying content to MacBook Pro

I have recently bought a MacBook Pro as my main computer and as I am new to Apple have no idea of the capabilities beyond the basic. I am a DirecTV subscriber and I would like to be able to copy college football games to the computer to burn to DVD. I am not so much concerned with being able to do this with HD but obviously if I can that is what I'd like to do. Any help and/or walk-through would be appreciated.
