I have a 42" Mits HD CRT RPTV (480i, 480p, 1080i). Signal is coming from a Samsung 360 D* hi def receiver which is capable of upconverting all signals to 1080i.

Now, my question has to do with DVD players. Currently I have a non-progressive DVD player being upconverted by the HD receiver. Looks pretty good to me. However, will I gain any discernable picture quality if I buy a progressive scan player? Or even a DVD player that has it's own ability to upconvert? (I saw a Samsung unit for less than $200 @ BB)

Bottom line: I'm not looking to spend extra $$ if not necessary.

Thanks to all who reply to my first post!!

It depends.

Every equipment combination is different and you'll just have to use your own eyes.

If the new DVD player has a better scaler/upconverter than your TV, then, yes the picture would improve. But if your TV has a better upscaler, you wouldn't be any better off.

If you want to try a different DVD player, just buy one locally from a store that allows returns. If you can't tell any improvement in PQ, just return the new player and keep using your old one.
