Noob Question

I hate my receiver. Time for an upgrade. How would one decide between Denon x6500h & Sony Elite vsx-lx504?

Want to replace my Cambridge Audio CXR 200 for basic operating issues like turning back on after I turn it off & input switching issues & codec, HDR limitations.

Powering 5 x Elac bookshelf speakers & 2 entry level SVS subs in a condo. Ballpark open concept living room dimensions - 12’ x 13’ x10’ (l x w x h).

The Denon would be a closer match to power. But if my basic understanding of things is correct... it’s crazy overkill.

Help?

4 ohm Elac speakers

That would be "Pioneer" not Sony. For moderate listening levels, there's no reason to step higher than the Denon X3500H (2018) or X3600H (2019) for a 5.2 setup.

And if I want to turn it up? As I do for movies...

Why do you compare those two?

The X6500H is a much more expensive AVR than a VSX-LX504.

Either seems excessive for a 5.2 system.

The X3500H that JD recommends seems like a reasonable choice. It's the lowest-end Denon model that includes the Audyssey XT32 room correction software. (That's the best retail version.)

The difference in power between an X3500H and an X6500H amounts to roughly 1dB. Barely audible.

If I wanted to inflict maximum annoyance on my condo neighbors, I might consider a Pioneer LX-SC model. They have Class D amplifiers, which implies the least tendency to overheat while driving 4 ohm speakers hard. There are a few models available as refurbs at accessories4less (and one available as new).

You live in a condo. Doubt you're going to be able to raise the volume very loud. ;)

Denon - To match the CXR 200 & my concerns re driving 4 ohm speakers. Sony - considerably cheaper.

I have an Aircom exhaust fan sitting on top of the receiver. Think that’s enough to alleviate X3500 overheating concerns?

Regarding neighbour concerns, only had complaints from a unit 1 floor down & 1 unit over. My subs are against the wall we share. I’m ok w/turning them down/off.

The pioneer elite 504 & denon x3600h are the same price point. Considering 4 ohm speakers, same answer? Denon?

Personal preference, although Denon comes with 3 year warranty and HDCP 2.3.
