Noob Questions

I have a receiver/TV/4 components/HDMI switch.

I am curious if a universal remote would actually eliminate my remote problem without being a history's mystery to my girlfriend.

Do they exectute receiver functions, such as speaker level adjustments? Would it be able to navigate the menu for a Sony 400 Disc DVD changer? Would I be able to navigate a HD DirecTV box? The HDMI switch?

I tried to get a handle on my options by reading Cnet reviews of Remotes and felt lost in space.

If complete listing of model numbers are required to answer this question. I'll be glad to write them down when I get home.

Thx everyone.

That's the 880 replacement, eh?

The 880 is significantly less. Is the Harmony One worth 2x the money?

Last I checked, the MSRP on the Harmony One was the same as the 880 ($249). The Harmony 880 has been out for a year, so it will obviously be available at a lower price, but I would not expect to pay $250 for the Harmony One if you buy it online. I suspect it will be available online in the $200 range within a month or two.

As for whether it is worth the premium, that would depend on how much you value the improved LCD, button layout, and superior button feel. You might try both and see whether the premium is justified.
Amazon has them for a lower price. I have an 890 and I love it. The 880 is also a great remote. The only difference between the 880 and 890 is I can control devices behind a cabinet door with RF instead of IR.

My wife can control the TV and I have not

I have not had a complaint in months about had hard it is to watch TV

Another benefit is not having to point the remote towards the devices, and thus perhaps miss some IR commands. For instance, starting the "Watch TV" activity takes about 12 seconds (turn on TV, turn on STB, turn on receiver, select correct inputs on devices).

This is a huge benefit in my home!
