Noob wiring question

322 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  AV_Integrated
I have a sony a9f ...
I have an older processor that is not 4k.

How should I wire ? How does the sound from my TV get to my processor. The TV has Ethernet for streaming.

Also ... I guess anything 1080p can route through the processor ... But 4k sources should run direct to the TV for video but audio seperate to processor ?

Hope this makes sense .. not sure I posted in the right sub forum.

Thanks guys

processor = A/V Receiver?
you could do 4k source > hdmi > TV and then do TV > "Processor" via a digital cable. the TV has a digital audio output - Toslink likely. use the remote to lower/turn off the TV volume and you'll hear the audio out of the processor to said speaker system

i think that is what you want.

Thanks !!

There is no tuner in my pre amp ...it's just a preamp/processor..

What you said makes total sense. Just want to avoid any lip synch problems if possible

So at the end of the day ...

Everything 1080 ...HDMI to preprocessor and then from there HDMI to tv.

4k ... HDMI or Ethernet direct to tv and audio from tv to preprocessor via optical cable from tv audio out.

99% sure the TV has a digital out. you shouldnt have lip synch issues.

Something to add, not all tv's support surround out via optical and only offer stereo. I'd look at maybe an ARC over hdmi to return the audio

ARC from TVs doesn't necessarily mean surround sound either. Some TVs deliver better sound with ARC, some deliver better sound with digital optical audio. Most deliver the same sound either way. ARC, of course, can carry the same audio as optical. But, the Sony features eARC, which can carry lossless audio.

All that said, we've YET to hear the make and model of the AV receiver which the original poster is using. Since that really determines everything.

Traditionally, and most easy:
4K sources and local streaming (smart) functionality direct into the TV. Audio out of the TV on optical to the AV receiver.
1080p sources, direct to the AV receiver, then out to the TV.

The Sony has both eARC as well as digital optical output, and as a high-end unit I would expect the highest level of audio to be available on the outputs which it has. This may be a function which is set in the menu of the TV itself.
