They should be configured to blow air towards the back of the rack. They're set up to draw air through the front of the case so they cool the hard drives as it passes between them. The hot air is then exhausted through the rear of the case.

Just a fan question for you guys.
Do you have your middle bank of fans (in my case 3 120mm) blowing on the HDD area towards the front of the case or blowing towards the back of the case?

I assumed so and that is how mine is set up. I was replacing the fans and got to thinking what if ....
