not impressed w/ Replay TV ads

Well, I saw my first ReplayTV commercial during the Opening Ceremonies last night. I was not impressed http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/frown.gif

It was the boxing one.

I'd heard it described here...I thought I'd like it...especially since I do agree w/ the concept of focusing on Pausing Live TV as that's the "slick" and easy-to-describe PTV feature you can get across in 30 seconds.

But I was unimpressed. First off...it didn't "Pause"...I didn't think the boxers standing around "worked" as funny or not. Show a PAUSED image...something cool like a waterfall falling or the one guy JUST ABOUT to punch the other. Also, don't use icons that aren't in the UI...if you think one is better than the other than integrate it into the UI. Just like their dual-logos...be consistent, Replay!

Also - I do NOT think it got across the most basic idea: that this was a consumer PRODUCT. "It pauses Live TV" not "It allows YOU to pause live TV". For all I know "ReplayTV" is some website that offers sports highlights...or a satellite service w/ repeating coverage. Where did it say "Joe Average: you can BUY this product". TiVo's SHOWS A GUY WITH A REMOTE! "Some televisions have all the fun." Oh, so "ReplayTV" is a TV set. Now I get it.

From the perspective of someone who might not know anything this commercial told me nothing. It didn't even prompt me to the web for more info.

Without even describing a lot of what it is, TiVo's commercials get across the idea that you will benefit from their product...ie: it'll calm down your kids, let you enjoy yourself after a long day of being a cop http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/wink.gif etc. Replay's commercial did not express what *I* get out of this "thing" being advertised.

Horrible, IMHO. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/frown.gif

Yes i have to agree woody,

Their ads have to improve, infomericals work too, and why not explain why

the product is so cool. I havent been impressed by Replays adveristing.
As a known TiVo user, am I allowed to say that I agree that it was pretty lame without getting flamed?

I agree. I thought it was pretty lame.

I agree it was sort of a lame way to tell people about the pause feature but at least it tells you something a PVR does. I prefer that to the Tivos "leave them amused but confused" approach to advertising.
I find TiVo's Ads Funny but that's about it, I enjoy watching them (especially that Cop one) but if I weren't a TiVo user I don't think I'd suddenly drop everything to go and find out what those ads were about, which is to bad because thats what the ads were designed to do. I have yet to see any Replay ads, but from what I've read here I'm not missing anything. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

I don't find them even funny.

Good topic Woody, someone from ReplayTV, please forward these comments onto your Ad Agency.

Nearly the only place I see Tivo commercials are on 2am showings of "The Critic" on Comedy Central. I'd applaud Replay for buying choice time slots even if they don't have the greatest ad to fill it with.

Last night I saw on Jepardy that they bave a replaytv unit to one of the losers. Of course they showed a picture and a short discription of what it could do with live tv. Very nicely done. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

a TV nut that's hard to crack.
Last night I saw another one - the "Cops" one, I guess.

What was I watching? Shoot, I forgot. I think it was "The War Next Door" on USA from Sunday night - not sure though. It was NOT the Olympics, where I saw the other one.

This one I found more mildly humorous but I still didn't think the Instant Replay "worked" - it wasn't quick enough...I actually got the impression the actors did their lines AGAIN rather than actually rewinding the playback.

I prefer the TiVo Cops commercial better...
Maybe, rather than trying to be entertaining, it's time to run an ad that says what a PTV recorder can do, or as much of it as can be clearly stated in a 30 second commercial.

Most of the people at work that I try to convince to try Replay still have no idea what it is exactly.
  • Automatically downloads the TV guide.
  • You select the shows that you want to be recorded.
  • Watch them at your convenience, even if something else is recording.

Not perfect, but a start, surely. Anyone else got any ideas for the perfect 30 second infomercial?

I think they should do a side by side comparison of a VCR up against a ReplayTV unit.

Darn! I haven't seen any of them yet!

Do you think it's because I haven't watched ANY commercials since I got mine? Actually, that's not true, but it felt so good saying it.

Just a thought:

Could it be that the UI we saw in the commercial is part of the 3.0 software?
Hey, I saw a 30-second ad that just highlighted Pause, Instant Replay and Quickskip very clearly. As the guy was doing each thing, a full screen text display came up, saying:

"You can Pause live TV"

"You can create your own Instant Replays"

"You can Quickskip 30 seconds ahead instantly"

The text may not be 100% accurate but this was the best informational commercial I have seen yet from either Replay or TiVo. This is also the only commercial I have watched in the last month (I will watch all ReplayTV ads since they liberated me from the rest).

There are at least a couple of Sony Tivo ads actually. They've been airing since May or so but I've never seen them during highly viewed shows.

The Tivo cops ad is my top pick for amusement value. But for getting someone interested in the product any Replay ad beats any Tivo/Sony ad, especially the one that mentions both pause and instant replay of live TV (guy in livingroom dancing around).

BTW they probably use the icons they do in the commercials to burn the white-bordered red circle image into viewers brains so that the Replay logo will jump out at them in the store. I doubt it represents any UI change in the upcoming software.

Also it said something about recording. Actualy the fast talking overtalker told a lot of what replaytv could do. It gave moere info than any commercial I saw. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

I share the disappointment with the TV ads. In my humble opinion ReplayTV is a REVOLUTIONARY product that will fundamentally change the future of television broadcasting---I am MORE excited about this than I was about my very first computer. The TV ads give absolutely no hint of how magically wonderful this product truly is!
