I was an early adopter of DSS. My theater has a older version Sony SAT-B1 or B2, I can't remember, but anyway a single LNB. A few months back I bought a hi resolution front projector and would like to add HDTV to the system. I would like to move the Sony out to the kids play room and replace it with a new HDTV compatable DSS reciever with a dual LNB that could output to the old reciever as well. Does this work? I don't need HDTV for the kids room and don't want two large DSS bills. I want to keep all my original programming for both rooms with the addition of HDTV in the projector room. One last thing and this is important, the unit must be narrow enough to fit in a standard rack mount. I'll make the face plate to match the rest. Any suggestions would be great...

Oh yea, I forgot to mention that we need the option of independant programming as we don't need no stinking cartoons on my projector, (kids) or ER (wife)...

The standard DTV oval dish, which you'll need for HD, has two dual LNBs and a multiswitch that supports up to 4 stbs. So, you can put the old turner in teh kids room and thay can watch whatever they want while you're watching HD. And, if the day ever comes when having HD in several rooms makes sense, the dish will still support it. If you already have a single dish up, you can self install the oval dish easily. It will bolt on your current mast, and IF (repeat IF) the mast is plumb, all you need is a compass to aim it and someone on the other end of the phone to help you do the fine adjustments.

I got the dish and the RCA DTC-100 as a package for around $550.

The DTC-100 won't support true rack mounting (i.e. with ears) but I have it in a rack shelf and it looks fine with my other gear. I think it's a great box for all possible HD options.
