Nothing better than a scratch-made meal.. NEW HOME THEATER

Hello Hi Everyone,

Today we started our home theater build and I'm excited to share the progress with everyone.

The room is 16' x 32', we are going to have three rows of seating, a stand-up pub counter behind the last row, and plenty of entertainment space.

I plan on doing a false wall for the screen where we can place all the center and front speakers behind, a Dolby Atmos 7.2.4 setup most likely Klipsch but that's a ways away, 120" homemade screen, and a very premier feel.

A lot of AT's, hidden LED lights and a general overall amazing experience is what we are shooting for.

Lumber for the walls and platform has been purchased and I'm constructing the platform as we speak. Insulation and Sub-floor should begin on the platform as soon as we get it set and in place.

Enjoy the pics for now and any direct knowledge is always welcomed as during my hours and hours of research I may have missed something.

Cheers!

from the pictures it doesn't look like you have the room height to pull off three rows and stand up counter while providing a large enough screen image for the true immersion experience of a theater. Do you have any plans showing a side elevation for the layout of the room? 120 inch screen is too small for a 3+ row theater.

If you are planning on sound isolation you will build the riser inside the drywall shell. That is also a lot easier to drywall rather than cutting panels to fit around a multi-level riser.
Yes the basement looks no more than 11 1/2 cinder blocks tall. If each block is 8 inches the joists are 92 inches off the floor.

In a 16 foot wide room why such a tiny screen? I'd be going at least 185"

The old counting blocks trick..

Thanks for everyone's input.. I wasn't really sure on the screen size and that 120 seemed to be a happy medium but we can definitely accommodate a bigger screen. I uploaded a very rough draft of what the layout was going to look like. The platform is completed we just started on walls and I wouldn't be opposed to nixing the first row of seating. So take a look and thanks again everyone.

Not shown in the diagram is your AT screen wall that will hide all your speakers
As drawn reclining theater seating will not fit on the riser.

30 inches for the screen wall, then add
11 ft to the seat back of the first row seating, plus 6 1/2 ft to the back of the second row
platform height of second row 12-16 inches

That will all fit in 20 ft and you will have good sight lines to the screen. I would like to use 11 1/2 for the back of the first row if you can move everything back 6 inches.

I was thinking of 2.35:1 but going with the Optoma UHD60 or 65 out of the box. What can you recommend aspect ratio wise with that projector? Not opposed to the 16:9 but just looking for some direction.

We can move everything for your recommended dimensions.
Didn't see an elevation dimension on that sketch.. How much room do you have from floor to bottom of joist?

I think that's going to be the driving factor for your room layout/dimensions..

Ceiling will end up being 92"
I've been playing around with the calculator and think this is the happy medium.. 150" in the 2.35:1

I don't think you will have enough height for 3 rows and even with two rows and 150" screen, your second row might not see the bottom of the screen unless you build the riser like Jeff mentioned.

Go to the riser calculator sticky and see what will be required with what you have to play with..

Did the calc, riser height of 15" is recommended.. The riser is built 120" x 120" x 16".. I will just kick it back to the starting distance as Jeff suggested, or nix the first row all together and move my Lovesac downstairs instead of seating.

not to mention, I will get the projector first and see where we are at screen/seating wise from who can see what. Blank slate with really no expectations so we'll see.
I think you need a well thought out plan before lifting the hammer tomorrow.

Are you sure about the projector? Have you seen it in action? I think in a blacked out room you'll be sorely disappointed by the horrible contrast /1000:1 native when calibrated/.
