I have recently purchased this model secondhand for $3000AUS,I,m new to this technology, I was impressed with the picture quality of the NEC 1035 ecspecially when viewing a DVD. I would like peoples opinion if I had made a reasonable choice for a first time projector considering what I paid, also if anybody has the same projector what did they do to improve the image quality of this product...thanks

You might try a grey screen to improve black levels. From memory it has plenty of brightness.
