Ok, so I upgraded my 2020 to 60 hours, largely because I had the hardware to do it, and because I've spent so long whining about being able to upgrade a ReplayTV. As it turned out, the necessity for such an upgrade was sort of moot, because the upgrade happened two days before my new 3030 arrived. I have gone from being sort of tight on record space to having more than I know what to do with. And, FWIW, the cost of buying a new unit and upgrading it is probably higher than just getting a 3060 new, but that's been covered elsewhere.

Just because I could, and just to "test" the new drive, I've reset all my record events to keep n episodes of everything. I have not deleted a single show since I upgraded the box last monday, and it's still nowhere near full. Obviously, since my stated reason all along has been to allow myself to record at higher quality, it's time for me to set my events to higher quality.

But, what I guess I'm asking is: For all of you with 60 hour Replays or 60+ hour TiVos, do you actually have 60 hours of stuff to record or do you just use the higher quality modes?

I mean, I'm a total TV junkie, but apparently, my whole-week TV diet is still considerably less than 60 hours.

I picked up a 3060 this month to replace my 2020. Primarily, this was to use the Medium quality setting for recording, although it does allow me to guarantee all the programs that I record which I couldn't do with the 2020.

I'm also time-shifting more and more DVDs that I rent... But recording quality was the real reason.

I tell you all one thing, being able to stockpile stuff that you don't have time to watch immediately is going to be an absolute Godsend come the summer!

I'm from oversees myself, so could somebody here explain to me the whole concept of American summer TV, and better yet, give me the braniac's name who thought it up!

Two to three months of repeats, gee, I can hardly wait!

i have 91 and 108 hour tivos. i use them both at highest quality settings for something like 20 and 28 hours os usable space.

for the record, i am currently maxing them both out because i'm so busy with work that i'm mostly unable to watch things. combined with the new season, i'm getting killed. of course, as soon as i watch some of the shows and see how bad they are, perhaps things will ease up a bit. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

I still only have my 2020, Since getting 3.0 I've been recording everything but football in standard/extended mode. Since 3.0 I no longer notice the pixilation, So my 2020 is almot 20hrs!

Rob, During the 3 month repeat-a-thons in the summer I like to watch shows That I don't normally watch during the rest of the year. that way I can watch newstuff year round.

I've got 88 hours between three TiVos (14, 30, 44), and I still record everything in basic quality. I simply use the space to keep more movies and B-grade TV around for the lean times. I've got about five weeks of That's Life, The District, and Murder One piling up on the 44, and I've still got tons of Suggestions.

Left,

Your post made perfect sense except for the part about Voyager. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/wink.gif

I guess I'm somewhat reassured that people aren't actually watching 60 hours/week of TV. If they were, I wouldn't know whether to be worried or jealous.

Toots,

I've got a 30 hr Replay and 91 hr TiVo. With a high-end system, anything less then the best quality is noticable. I've got the default record quality at medium on the Replay and best on the TiVo. (I'm going to upgrade the Replay with an 80GB when the patching is confirmed, then switch to high quality as its default.)

That's about 25 hours on the TiVo and 15 hours on the Replay. With that said, my wife and I have enough things set for recording (we've got local TV, DirecTV, and C-band satellite inputs) that we can't go for more that 3-4 days without deleting before starting to fill things up.

I'm painfully aware of the quality problems at the crappy speed on both units. That's my main reason for wanting to upgrade. It just seemed kind of fun to see how long it'd take to fill up at crappy speed.

The 60G drive was originally intended for the TiVo, but that upgrade failed due to the "hang after dial-in" problem. It found its way into the Replay instead.

I've been finding 20 hours adequate but tight. Since then, I've got a RTV 3030 and a 14 hour TiVo, so I figure my 60 hour Replay can revert to a really good looking 20 hour Replay, and I can catch the chaff and spill-over on the other two units.
