Well done story, thanks for the post. I found the comments by the broadcaster from Washington (if I followed it right) about his non conversion to DTV interesting and insightful. He said he has not invested the money and converted since it is expensive and there is no added revenue available for doing so, and also no additional benefit to his advertisers. Perhaps if he was paying a LARGE fine for his delay tactics that attitude would change?

It was a well done story.... But I'm superised there was no mention of Hdnet at all even though it is only DirecTV, Cuban has single handedly done more for HDTV than any of the networks.

Good point. However, I think the focus was on broadcasters, not Sat transmission.

I was amused, they said "he has a 92 inch screen" with emphasis as if

that were amazing.

Thats a small screen by FP standards.

Yeah I noticed that too.... I would hate to see what that guy would do with 150 inch screen.

You can always use Winamp with its Real Plug-in. It behaves a lot nicer than RealPlayer.

Although it is unfortunately not suprising to me that an Albritton owned station would be seriously behind the HDTV roll-out, I question the estimate of 1,500 HD displays in the DC DMA by the WJLA manager.

Well, what the hell do you expect from a self-serving, lying lackey of fat man Joe Allbritton . . .

I heard the report while in the car on the way to the office. I wondered if "Tim" was on AVS Forum and sure enough!

I thought the story was good and was glad it went beyond just the lagging efforts of stations converting to digital but also distinguished HD. Good job.

Didn't these station owners get all this frequency for free with the understanding that it was for digital transmission eventually leading to H/DTV. I know there's no guarantee of H/DTV but once the content picks up and they have to compete against it they'll move a little quicker.

If they think its not economically feasible to roll out H/DTV then they can give back the air space.

IMO we are in a standoff position until we get the digital rights issues settled. The lack of HDTV interconnect and recording standards will cloud both the broadcasters, satellite/cable providers and consumers desire to spend serious money until they have a comitted roadmap for where things are going.

It's easy to blame a broadcaster for not wanting to spend a couple of million but without any offsetting revenue how many of us would do it from our pockets? In fact damm few consumers are even willing to spend the $500 it takes to buy a STB. They ARE spending the money on "HDTV compatible" sets and projectors but electing to watch NTSC and DVDs on them.

The coming content will help but I think that many folks will hold back on HDTV until they aren't scared of being obsoleted by the next shoe that drops.

I agree with some of that Carl. The people dont care about it yet in large measure for a number of reasons. They not holding back due to interconnect issues and stuff though really cause 90% of those folks dont know the difference anyway. Primarily I think they're waiting for Cable tv to bring it in their home (if they even care at all). Thats how most people that watch any appreciable amount of tv do it now, why would HDTV be any different?

But while at least some of the broadcasters have been working diligently to get digital signals on the air over the last couple years, especially in the biggest markets, can Cable say the same thing in regards to retransmission of those signals??

I didnt think so.

Dan, you nailed it on cable !

My local cable company dropped all premium channels on their analog service in an attempt to force folks to their higher priced digital service. When I asked them if they had ANY HD programming the reply was "planned for sometime in 2003", my answer was "adios" .

It was just the incentive I needed to sign up for DirecTV and buy a Panasonic HD STB. Apparently many others around here are also electing to do this as it took three installer appointments to finally get the system installed. They are constantly overbooked around here.

I think though that here in the Silicon Valley we have a more tech savvy bunch than in most parts of the country. I know of lots of friends that are holding off upgrading their RPTVs until they think the risk of obsolescence is under control. They don't have to understand the exact issues to know its trouble when they see Les Vadasz of Intel on TV being scolded by Sen Fritz and being told that their position is "nonsense".

A recent full page article in the San Jose Mercury news compared the differences between cable and satellite services. Not a single word was written about the lack of availability of HD programs on cable.
