Looking to build a PVR type HTPC that can tune and record both ntsc and hdtv signals to hard drive. Encoding must be hardware based on card. Of course it must be cheap too! Does anything like this exist?

Check the "MyHD" HDTV tuner card threads here and in the Power Buy section - $299 until 5/20. It can record HD but apparently not NTSC - not sure why; I may be wrong. Does do video capture on NTSC input(?) - lots of partial info, as these are just shipping now. HiPix and AccessDTV are the other two HD tuners, but both have problems currently.

Be aware that any of these tune HD only from off-the-air sources - check antennaweb.org to see if you can receive any DTV at your location and what antenna you need.

The MyHD card does record ntsc signals, but not in mpeg format. The format it uses is comparable to vhs in quality.
