Number of Replay Subscribers?

1945 Views 21 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  rm -rf *.*
Anyone know or can guess how many Replay subscribers are today? I'd be curious to know how us loyalist are still around. Anyone want to take a guess?

My guess:

5,000 monthly subscribers (I have 1 monthly since 2003)

3,000 life time owners

(i'm sure i'm way off)

Well, just me represents 3 life and 2 monthly.
There are a lot more than that. I'd say the numbers are in the tens of thousands.

Let's see, I have 7. I guess we could start counting.

Then again, the world may never know....

It's about five or six times that as of a few years ago. A DNNA exec mentioned the subscriber base in this interview from a few years ago.
I imagine the number of monthly subscribers will- if it hasn't already, start to drop off more quickly then in the past with the proliferation of sub $999 42"+ flat panel TV's, Hi-def cable, Hi-def Satellite and FIOS. TiVo now has two hi-def DVR's (one for $299) and every cable co offers their own Motorola or Scientific Atlanta hi-def rental STB and DVR's now.
I imagine there are a lot of lifetime people still using it because its free. I still tape a number of shows on my 2 45xx's as a backup to my HD DVR's in case something goes wrong. The trick is that its been a while since I had to use that backup. If I were monthly I would have dropped a while back.

All of which do not have the usability and capabilities of the ReplayTV. I am holding my breath until RTV releases a new dual tuner, HD, Hardware version that is compatible with older versions. (I hear either Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, or the Tooth Fairy will be delivering it)

On a positive note I guess I can keep My RTVs next to my HD DVD player - they should have a lot to talk about.

To add to the account... I have 1 Lifetime and 2 Monthly...

I know your pain. Most of my equipment went downhill after I bought them. I have my HD DVD player already sitting on top of my 2 replay tv units.
If by the references to HD DVD you mean it will not be successful, you'd better check again.

Many think the completely unexpected decision by Warner Bro's on Jan 4th to go Blu-Ray exclusive ( http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/04/w...ray-exclusive/ ) to be the nail in the coffin for HD DVD. Many HD DVD backers on the AVS forum have put a self-imposed moratorium on buying HD DVD's, many will not invest in a new/second HD DVD only player or HD DVD drive for their computer. Others have stopped recommending HD DVD to friends/family and acquaintances because of it's unsure future status. If any other studio's who are presently dual-format or HD DVD only go Blu exclusive because they see the Warner decision as a "things to come" move, it will surly be game over for HD DVD! If that doesn't seem like bad news for the HD DVD format... then what does?

I'm a HD DVD backer, I have a Toshiba HD DVD player and about 30 HD DVD's now, I bought my in-laws a Toshiba HD DVD player for Christmas- but it certainly looks like the handwriting's on the wall for HD DVD.

Sony lost the BetaMax versus VHS battle years ago, even though their BetaMax format was far superior in many aspects to VHS. In this case, HD DVD may prove to be a superior format, but it may ultimately fail regardless of it's technical merits.

Business and industry analysts have opinions which are actually based on something. Many, including John Dvorak claim there will be one and it will be HD DVD. Most say the 2 will co-exist with most manufacturers building dual players and Toshiba and Sony finally agreeing on the next gen.

There is no majority of studios using Bluray exclusively. Titles and sales are roughly equal. With the tremendous push of freebies and lower prices on HD-DVD recently, there was a huge jump in HD DVD units out there as opposed to game units. All of these units will require feeding.

HD DVD has no region coding. Once the number of units out there reaches a certain level, the far east will start cranking out and no region coding is nirvana to them.

Initially Sony banned porn on Bluray. They now claim they will not control what gets pressed, but no Sony owned subsidiary is allowed to dupe porn. Currently the major porn makers are working on the theory that porn hounds will download movies to their computers as the wave of the future, and are not really embracing the new DVDs. As someone who has worked in the video business I can say it is ridiculous to think these people will spend $5-10 to d/l a flick as opposed to renting it for $2. When Hollywood dropped VHS movies to $15-20 people would STILL buy blanks and dupe them in a 100 to 1 factor. If porn moves even slightly in the direction of HD DVD, it's all over.

There isn't the slightest reason to buy coffin nails for either format---yet.

Wow! How do you do this? Did you mod it with some type of external tape backup?

While this may have been true a few months ago, things are changing quickly. Soon, Warner Brothers is going to Bluray exclusively. While I'm sure I may miss someone, that makes Sony, Disney & WB as Bluray leaving only Universal and Paramount as HD-DVD only. Paramount is on the edge of switching to Bluray. It hasn't happened yet, but they had a clause in the contract stipulating that they can switch if WB went to Bluray. If that happens, only Universal (and porn companies) will be making HD-DVDs.

WB going Bluray only may not be a reason to buy nails, but it may be a reason to tread cautiously. Toshiba is already starting fire sales on all of it's HD-DVD players and I'm sure they're not doing this because of high demand, but perhaps they see the writing on the walls.

Personally, I still don't care who wins. I have both players and watch both formats. I really can't see a difference in the quality, although I'm sure someone will point them out. That being said, I seem to be watching more Blurays than HD-DVDs. I'm not selecting them because of the format, but because most movies are only shown in one or the other and I seem to be picking out the Bluray movies to watch more than the HD-DVDs.

Yoo-Hoo! Wake up McFly! The OP asked about total numbers.

You're completely delusional and terminally stupid if you think that your useless polls here are going to give you some handle on the total number of RTV's are still active.

All you are going to do is find out how many RTVs the AVS forum members who bother to actually vote have.

Dude, that is harsh.

Yes, it is.
Harsh but correct. There's no point to creating all these useless polls, because no one knows what percentage of RTV owners come here and/or care enough to register and respond.
