Yes, you can do ai upscaling for streamed content. I watch a lot of HBO max. I know that service upscales when you set that switch on.

Pretty sure Netflix upscales too. I want to say Disney Plus too. I have Hulu and prime also but I can't recall if those upscale.

They all work with AI upscaling.

Is there a photo display/slideshow app that works with or without Plex on the Shield Pro that's better than the stock photo viewer that's in Plex, which is 100% feature-free?

If you are running a Synology NAS, I highly recommend DS Photo. Of course, if you aren't, then I can't help.

Is there any reason why the the Home Screen colors of the Shield 2019 Pro would look slightly different to that of the Sony's inbuilt Home Screen colors? I notice the reds are more saturated on the Sony X900H. I have matched both color settings for both the inbuilt Google TV OS and the Shield 2019 Pro connected to HDMI one.
Both have same Custom picture modes and sub settings within them. Im thinking perhaps the Shield display settings might need to be changed to something , its currently set to Resolution 4K 59.940Hz Dolby Vision and HDR10 ready.

Under Custom Display Mode for Shield , its current display mode shows as 3840X2160 59.940Hz YUV 422 12 bit Rec. 2020 Dolby Vision and HDR10 ready.

Set to default is unchecked, which its value shows as 3840X2160 59.940Hz YUV 420 10 bit Rec. 2020 HDR10 ready.

Yes. BT.2020 vs rec.709. Make sure you have the checkbox set in the options to allow it to automagically switch.

I think the Shield launcher is only 1080p while the TV's is probably 4K.
I don't care what the colors are doing on the launcher, but the Shield's looks much better without that ugly add for 'tubi'.
I'll always prefer the Shield for that reason alone. (Until the Shield gets the ads too, which will happen eventually.)

I agree, I don't even use the inbuilt TV player Google TV app. Aint even signed into it.

Setting it to Rec2020 the color matcher doesn‘t work. You have to set it to Rec709 and enable color matcher. Don‘t know if that is a bug.

I was going to reply to @Limeybastard but you beat me to it. Anytime I use the BT 2020 output from the shield, I never got any rec 709.

Yes sorry I forgot to add that part in my post. That's absolutely correct that you must default to rec709 for it to work properly.

Question about the Ai up scaling, mines currently set AI-Enhanced with detail enhancement set to medium.
When watching for example YouTube content , I can see it it sharpening the faces of people then it stops and sharpening the face, like a loop that occurs every second or so. Is this normal operation?

A device's color space setting defines the number of colors and hues it can reproduce.

REC709 color space is the amount of colors and hues in HD, and is mostly used in broadcast and cable/sat content delivery of HD (1080) images. If you're watching an old SD TV show, the color space is REC601, which is narrower than REC709.

BT2020 is an expanded color space with more secondary color (cyan magenta yellow) hues, and often (though not always) more saturation. It is used often, although not always, in UHD content.

Technically, nothing currently available in professional or home display devices can actually reproduce the full BT2020 spectrum. There is one very expensive professional projector that comes close, but for now, that's it. Content that purports to be BT2020 is actually P3 color space in a BT2020 wrapper. P3 color space falls somewhere between the REC709 and the BT2020 spec in terms of colors and hues.

Normal operation: The Match Content Color Space sends REC 709 to display if the source has REC 709. Send REC 2020 to the display if the source has REC 2020 (also called BT2020).

This setting works IF you set out Shield to output REC 709 and HDR/DV. example: mine is set to 3840x2161 23.976 Hz YUV 422 12-bit Rec. 709 HDR10 Ready. When I get BT2020 content, it sends BT2020 to display.

If I set shield to REC 2020, then the shield always sends REC 2020 even if the source is REC 709. Example: 3840x2161 23.976 Hz YUV 422 12-bit Rec. 2020 HDR10 Ready. In this case, the shield menus, and all source content that is REC 709 gets placed in a REC 2020 wrapper and sent to display. The colors will seem a little off if you do it this way. So no switching occurs. I think it is a bug in the software.

My suggestion: send REC 709 and HDR/DV so that the shield menu colors look right... AND turn on Match Content Color Space
