Check out the new features of Nividia NV17 GPU from x-bitlabs review :

MPEG2 (DVD) Hardware Decoding. It is a good response to the hardware IDCT conversion which has been living in ATI products for a long time already. The NV17M implements IDCT and IQ (Inverse Quantization -ATI can't fulfill this initial stage of decoding) on the hardware level, as well as Motion Compensation and Color Space Conversion. It is stated that the utilization of the processor decoding a DVD video stream is 3 times lower now (from 45% to 15%), which is a large commitment to the overall power consumption of a notebook
xbitlabs reports those features will be in next NV25 Nvidia desktop GPU (GeForce4).

I guess they will be in the next revision of nForce too based on the GeForce3 design, then we'll have an all integrated motherboard with hardware DVD decoding and Dolby Digital 5.1 encoding with SPDIF. Since it has a network chip too, that will be a very high integrated and low cost solution !

Looks like nVidia is on its way to make a perfect HTPC for us :D

I think that the main problem with Nvidia cards for DVD is 8bit overlay and no HW gamma adjustment. Unless they fix this they can't compete with ATI in this arena.
