So I've been wanting to buy Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion for a long time; but being a frugal gamer
, I've waited until the price of the Game of the Year edition droped to $30. I own a PS3 and will be purchasing a 360 soon. I don't care about which platform has better looking graphics. My main conern is bugs. Which version has the least serious or annoying bugs? Like ones that prevent you from finishing side quests or the main game. (I'm sure the PC version probably has the least bugs, but I don't want to upgrade my computer right now, to be able to play it)

This is not a flame bait thread. Otherwise, I would have posted this in the Cross Platform thread (whoose only saving grace is the twinkie vs. hoho debate).

P.S. How has Bethesda not corrected all the bugs for this game by now?
Did they just move onto Fallout 3 and abandon fixing the bugs?

P.P.S. I cross posted this in the Xbox area.

The PS3 version runs much better; 360 has long load times (although this could be alleviated by installing it to the HDD) and will freeze/stutter a lot more than the PS3 version, at least from my experiences.

I think the PS3 version is considered better in all respects. They did have about a year to polish it, after all. In any case, textures, draw distance, and load times are all supposed to be better on the PS3 version.

I can't say which has less, but I put about 100 hours into the PS3 version and didn't come across any... I'd bet both versions are pretty polished by now, and it's unlikely you'll come across any of the game-freezing/quest-killing bugs that Fallout has.

360 is lower res, no AF and has longer load times. When I owned it it crashed like once an hour and I could never finish the main quest due to fatal bugs, they may have patched it though.

The PS3 version of the GOTY has a bug where you can't complete the quest for curing vampirism. This bug is not present in that system's non-GOTY edition, but it doesn't contain the Shivering Isles expansion pack, which is $30 everywhere I've looked.

Other than that, I don't know of one being buggier than the other. I know you said you don't want to upgrade your computer, but the PC version has an unofficial patch that fixes many things. I believe this patch is still being updated, too, while Bethesda is apparently not working on any more fixes.

The only real difference I've noticed is that the PS3 has no rumble. It's not a big deal really though. I've head it runs smoother on the PS3 also.

The PS3 version is the one to get, it just plain runs better. Once upon a time you could make an argument for the 360 version because of downloadable content, but the GOTY edition includes that content on the disk already so you don't even need to waste hard drive space. Oblivion is still the best RPG I have played this generation (although I have high hopes for FFXIII).

I know you don;t want to spend money on your PC, but video cards are very affordable right now and it doesn't take a high end card to run it nicely. It also allows for much better textures and AA with HDR at the same time, which makes a huge difference.

I'm positive that bug was in all versions of the game, I remember reading about it when the game first came out and I was playing it on the PC.

I've been debating getting this for the PS3. I had about 70-something hours into Oblivion on my PC, until the video card fried. I'd finished the main quest, but started to poke around the smaller quests, and begin Shivering Isles. That was a couple of years ago. If I could convert my savegames for the PS3, I'd buy it in a second.

And sadly I'm not ready to invest in any PC hardware yet. I keep hoping that there will be some magic way to convert a savegame. Sigh.

your absolutely right, my advice would be to either switch languages and see if that helps( more info can be found at UESP.com for further details ) or keep plenty of cure disease potions or spells handy and just as long as you treat the disease before 3 days, then you should be fine. those are really the only workarounds theres a few more but they seem to be hit or miss.

aside from that bug, overall the PS3 version is the superior game graphically and performance wise.

It was in the original versions of the game (pre-PS3), but they fixed it in a patch, and the first PS3 edition didn't have it. It came back in the PS3 GOTY edition.

It's not a huge deal, since it only stops you from completing one quest, but it's the only major bug I could think of that is specific to that version. There are other bugs in all versions, of course.

There IS some content you can't get for the PS3 edition that you can get on the PC and 360, however. The PS3 editions (both of them) contain Knights of the Nine, while the GOTY adds Shivering Isles. However, none of the other plug-ins such as the horse armor, Fighter's Stronghold, and the Wizard's Tower are available. These look like minor additions though, so I don't think I'd base my decision just on them.

By the way..will a cure disease potion work? I just found out I have it and I do not want to be a vampire.

Yes, that will work, or you can cast a spell or eat an ingredient that cures disease.

The issue with the bug is that the "Vampire Cure" quest cannot be completed. It is just one of many optional quests, so it doesn't ruin the game or anything. You can still keep from becoming a vampire if you do something to cure the disease in the first 3 days, but if you don't do this, after that point you'll be stuck as a vampire. Just be sure to cure it any time you see the message that you have contacted porphyric hemophilia (from getting hit while fighting a vampire character).

Are the extra missions even that good? I played the non-GOTY version and there was more than enough to do.

I never played it on the PS3; I do however own the GOTY 360 version and I've never had a crash of any sort with the game. I did however, have a problem with loading once, but simply clearing the cache on the drive resolve my issue.

i played oblivion for about 200+ hours and never touched the shivering isles... there is so much to do without it.

the dark brotherhood hood quest is worth the the price of the game itself - it's just freaking brilliant...
