Observation:

480i or 480p input only on the RGB or Pr, Y, Pb

Expectation:

Allow any resolution input to upscale to native resolution of display, in my case 1365x768. i was hoping to scale 1080i to 1365x768 to avoid scaling by the NEC plasma.

Observation:

CS-2 set for 1366x768 output, NEC Plasma indicates resolution being received is 1024x768. no CS-2 scaled output matches the NEC plasma's stated received resolution. is this the VGA cable or the CS-2 is not up scaling to 1365x768. Tech support says it will take DVI connection to achieve 1365x768 native resolution

Expectation:

The CS-2 would output 1365x768 and the plasma would receive 1365x768 from all CS-2 outputs and on all NEC inputs. i think this is just a lack of knowledge on my part.

Observation:

480p input does not function as well as 480i input

Expectation:

480p would give me a better picture than 480i. when i use 480p out of DCT 5100 STB the picture is left justified and i loose aspect ratio control.

i purchased the CS-2 specifically for "matching" the DCT 5100 STB outputs to the CS-2 inputs. iScan Pro had limited less inputs and only 480p out.

Observation:

CS-2 is just as good as iScan Pro for DVD input source. CS-2 a little below iScan Pro when input source is cable.

Expectation:

CS-2 would out perform iScan Pro in all areas. after adjusting the plasma and the CS-2 I think the CS-2 is performing as well as the iScan Pro which had 480p output only.

Observation:

top output or bottom plasma display line out of CS-2 can be nosiy and distorted

Expectation:

did not expect the top or bottom lines to be nosiy/distorted. tech support indicated that the screen size and position could be adjusted to "hide" these nosiy/distored top or bottom lines. adjustments work sometime but distorted line returns when least expected.

Observation:

iScan Pro selects the current "hot" input and you can indicate which one to give priority

Expectation:

i was hoping the CS-2 would do the same. i thought it did once but then the next time it seemed to required me to select input by remote

Observation:

since i can only input 480i or 480p (480i gives me more feature & functions)

i wonder if the direct hook-up of the DCT 5100 cable STB outputting at 1080i would produce better results ? will have to try to take CS-2 out of the mix and see what the results.

Expectation:

Based on what i see using 480i output from the DCT 5100 and of course the limit of 480i on the CS-2 I can not imagine the results would be any better with the CS-2 out of the mix. the HDTV picture thru the CS-2 is remarkable to me. in a few months i will spring for the DVI cable in order to achieve 1365x768 scaling out of the CS-2 to see if the results are any better. i suspect the DCT 5100 is just scaling the output to 1080i, still i would prefer to input a 1080i signal to the CS-2 and have it scale it to 1365x768.

Observation:

Is the 1366x768 limited to the DVI output of the CS-2 ?

Expectation:

All output resolutions would be available on the VGA and DVI CS-2 outputs.

Are there certain output resolutions restricted to each output ? None of the output resolutions from the CS-2's VGA match the NEC resolution in from the plasma's display information.

Observation:

Setting the NEC to WIDE1 on RGB the NEC will display 1360x765 / 1360x768 resolution. I had been using DTV or MOTION setting and only showed 1024x768 resolution on the NEC.

Expectation:

I am still confused why the CS-2 and the NEC will not sync up as far as resolutions go. i have a custom CS-2 resolution of 1368x768 but the results are the same as the CS-2 defined 1366x768 resolution. The PQ is great I have just been trying to avoid the NEC scaling the input again to 1365x768 native resolition.

Overall Observation:

CS-2 is a fine addition to my home theater set-up.

Expectation:

the wife would see the improvement over the iScan Pro (used only for a year). right now when it comes to cable HDTV she approves. she agrees the DVD is the same quality as the iScan Pro and standard cable TV might be a little less quality out of the CS-2.

Would I spend the money again ?

Yes, I would just ask a lot more questions on what the technical specifications are and what the "outside" requirements are. IE DVI cable output to achieve 1365x768. i am still in contact with tech support to clarify DVI cable requirements and trying to avoid any other surprises. one pleasent surprise was the control over aspect ratio from the CS-2 over the HDTV cable channels.

by the way the iScan Pro is an excellent 480p output device and teamed with the internal scaler of the NEC plasma achieved better results than a direct feed into the NEC.

i hope this helps others in their decision making process.

Perhaps the native rate resolution "problem" is in the NEC plasma and not the cable and/or CS-2.

Job Boden states in another thread:

I believe the NEC native rate is actually 1365 x 768. Most plasmas are having trouble being driven at native rate. AFAIK, only Pioneers are doing it successfully at the moment.

Also in researching the difference between the CS-2 and the NEC I ran across this in the NEC manual.

Supported Resolution:

- When the screen mode is NORMAL, each signal is converted to a 1024x768 lines signal

- When the screen mode is TRUE, the picture is displayed in the original resolution

- When the screen mode is FULL, each signal is converted to a 1364x768 lines signal

I have never seen a TRUE mode on the NEC. I will have to try the difference between the NORMAL and FULL modes to see if the CS-2 and NEC match resolutions. I am currently showing 1024x768 on the NEC whic is mentioned in the NORMAL screen mode.

Although a longshot: Try 1368*768 - I know it sounds a bit silly...

About DVI: There is rumors that DVI-D is not supported over 1280*1024, and the NEC (and a few other 50 and 60 inch plasmas) has 1365/1366 pixels in one direction. So this might be a problem.

Question to NEC Tech Support:

I am trying to achieve 1365x768 input resolution from an external Focus

Enhancement CenterStage CS-2 line scaler. Right now the line scaler is

set to scale to 1366x768 but the NEC plasma states the resolution is

1024x768 under the Information display. My input is VGA cable. Will a

DVI cable make a difference or do you think the line scaler is not sending

the proper resolution ?

Response from NEC Tech Support:

The plasma may be "thinking" that the signal input's resolution is 1024 x

768 instead of 1366 x 768 due to the signal timings &/or polarity. When you are sending the plasma the 1366 x 768 signal from your scaler, what does the plasma report for the Horizontal & Vertical signal timings & polarity?

i am still waiting on a response from NEC Tech Support. their first response to my e-mail came within 3 days of my request. this latest question to them is being ignored so far.

Response from NEC Tech Support related to CS-2 and native resolution:

In this case, you will need to tell the plasma that the signal is 1366x768.

Select "Wide 1" under "OPTION", "RGB SELECT"

The Plasma does report 1360x765/1360x768 when this is selected on the plasma.
