Odd DVD playback issue

465 Views 12 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  schticker
Original XBox question. I have my XBox hooked up with Monster component cables to a Mits rear projection HD TV. Same hookup for years now.

Always looked great. Suddenly, I can not see video when i play DVDs. I get audio only. Also, it does not show the "dashboard" where you can change settings - when there is no disc in the console. Seems that only 480p images are displayed not 480i. My kids could have changed a setting accidentally but i can't figure out what -- TV or XBox? Could it be the cables? I tried another DVD playback kit but had the same problem. Ideas?

It is the TV. It is not recognizing the 480i signal on that input. The dashboard and DVD's are

shown in 480i on the original Xbox. Do games show up? If so, it is a setting on the TV.

What type of Mits do you have?
Its a 2002 model I think. Something like a Mitsubishi WS5501. Anyway, its a rear projection, 55 inch HD television. I don't doubt that the kids have messed with something. Thanks for any help you can provide.
I looked at the owners manual for the 2002 55" WS and the 2003 and they both

say that the inputs accept 480i/480p/1080i on all of the the component inputs.

Do you see a game when you play the game?

There is also a setting on your XBOX that says your TV accepts 480i/480p/1080i. Have

you checked that?

Thats the odd part -- the games play fine. Everything worked fine for a few years, this is a recent problem. Because i can't see the "dashboard", i can't change the settings on the XBox.
You are going to have to plug in the standard Def cables so you can look at it. Sorry man.
I still get no picture even with standard def cables. I will try another TV at lunch
For dashboard, just pull both triggers and presss down on both thumbsticks at the same time; that will change the dashboard to 480p. As to why your TV isn't display 480i over component when it has for years before, I have no clue.
kyle's idea of pulling both triggers and pushing both joysticks DID bring up the dashboard. I could check the settings like before and everything seemed OK. However, when i tried a DVD, same issue -- no picture, just sound. Plus, when I took the movie out, the dashboard was invisible again! This is an original XBox from 2001, do you think this is a DVD drive issue, cable issue, computer chip issue or TV issue? Thanks
Oh well, i just found out i lost the TV in a divorce! She can get the thing fixed!
I am betting your kids set the XBMC or Xbox to output 720p which your TV is not supporting. Try replacing your HD pack with a standard def pack (which will force 480i) and see if you can alter some settings that way.

But if it's not your TV anymore...

It probably only accepts 1080i on one input, 480p on the other two. Make sure it's enabled in the menu.
