I'm having an odd lock-up problem with my 5040 modified with a 300 GB drive about 3 years ago.

The lock-up happens when the unit is recording something. The red recording light is on. But, the unit is unresponsive to input from the remote control. We can turn the power off on the unit with the power button on the front. The funny thing is, when you hit the power button, the picture turns off, but the blue light stays on. I'm usually able to do a warm reboot by holding the power button for 10 seconds (I say usually, because there have been times that the power button doesn't work, and I need to do a cold reboot). When the unit finally reboots, there is a show recorded that is way too long. So, if the unit locked-up overnight, and we didn't reboot until the following evening, there will be a ~17 hour recording with the name of the show that started recording the night before, and it actually has 17 hours of that channel recorded (the desired show plus 16 hours of whatever was on next on the channel).

Some additional info: When the problem started happening, I found that we had 150 shows recorded on the unit. We have since deleted shows to get it below 100, but we have still had the lock-up problem. It seems to happen once every 2- or 3- days.

Has anyone seen this before? Any suggestions? I'm bracing myself for the factory reset or re-patch the drive with a fresh image. Maybe I should take this as a warning and purchase a new drive, if/while we can still find some

Thanks.

I've had that happen occasional (exactly the same, where the recording is however long from the beginning of the show until I reboot the RTV) and have usually attributed it to too many things going on at the same time, like an IVS transfer while it was recording and maybe streaming a show remotely or just accessing the guide remotely...

I also had a hard drive that would cause the RTV to lock up randomly only while recording. But, my recollection on that was that the amount of show it recorded was only from the beginning of the show until it locked up...

With it happening frequently for you, unless there is something new in the way that you are using the RTV, I would suspect that it is likely a hard drive problem. However, you should be diligent and check the power supply and the mother board screws following this information: http://www.replaytvupgrade.com/Mikey...rproblems.html ...

Thanks Henry. I'll try the suggestions in Mikeyboy's post. Sounds like a good weekend project.

I did just have the lock-up again tonight, but it wasn't recording this time. It did have the situation where the power could be turned off with the button, but the blue light stayed on. A warm reboot got it going again...

Thanks again,

Exactly the same as Henry's first part. Recording, downloading to DVA and streaming. This particular Replay does everything at med qual. Guess that 3 simultaneous operations at med qual are too taxing on the system. When i'm careful, it doesn't happen.
