Isnt the W802A supposed to be the model thats replacing the HX750? Or is it the 645 that its replaceing? I have no plans on replaceing my tv any time soon I was just curious. Thanks for posting the info though because I am sure some will be interested.

Keep in mind that some of the models are now Passive 3D, so there isn't always much of a 1:1.

Other than that though, I'm still not at all clear how they've planned on lining things up. My guess is that the 645 you mention is probably closer to the current R550A (and R520A) line for PQ. But from model year to model year there are things that don't translate directly to models. There are features on paper that can be compared, but failings such as extensive edge bleed like (cough) LG, or rampant DSE are what people watch for, and it's often a crapshoot as to which model is plagued by what.

Frankly, there are a number of bottom level TV's that would have made me very happy had they done in real life what they were purported to do on paper.

A further confusion. Sony seems to have no mention of "Local Dimming" here. Instead they are referring to "Frame Dimming" (which is something that I believe most folks could not STAND about Samsung TVs----so I'm hoping this isn't the same thing), and "Dynamic Edge LED Backlight". The latter sounds like a variant of local dimming.

Note also, that both of these things are lacking in the R550A models.

A customer service rep told me that the W802A is indeed the HX750's replacement but where the HX750 uses Active the W802A uses Passive 3D. If I was to replace my tv, which I aint!, I would pass.

Sounds good to me. From the reviewers I trust here, the 2012 HX750 seems fairly solid. And I'll take passive over active any day.

The HX750 is an awesome tv tgm and if you couldn't get one I guess the W802a is the next best thing. I prefer Active over Passive but that's just my choice.

sony''s customer rep has offered me the hx750 or the 802a as a replacement for my 645 unit. Looks like the only difference is passive vs active. i am not a big 3D watcher so i might make the decision on design and the 802a looks pretty slick.

Take a pass on design if you save casheesh unless one suffers from multiple ugliosis, which neither does. The 2012 is $1500 right now (fulfilled by amazon & prime). Both TVs are perfectly fine looking and sonys are a bit uber-priced anyway. That said however, do the 2012 models offer that "dual play" style ability? That is a technology specific to 3D, and I'm not sure I've seen that on active units. It's a seriously cool idea to have two people play side by side using the same exact screen and not see each other's "display".

I hope this is a useful thread for folks---please tell me if there's information that belongs in the top post if anything new shows up. I'm updating that as I find things.

ha, the gaming thing does sound cool, especially since i do game quite a bit. i should clarify though, i am NOT paying for the unit. they are giving me a choice to replace my ex645 with the hx750 or w802a. right now, im leaning 802a...

I noticed on the Sony site under specifications for inputs/outputs it lists:

Digital Audio Input(s) : 1(Rear)

but it doesn't list a digital audio output

I went and checked the listed specs for the HX750 and 850 and it lists Digital Audio Output for those models.

I really hope this isn't the case and the DA Input is a typo and it is actually an output.

I'm leaning towards this TV but I need to have an optical audio output for OTA dolby digital to my receiver.

Would Sony actually remove this from the 2013 models? Such a small thing really but a deal breaker for me

I didn't see that spec. Wow. I can't imagine that Sony would actually require HDMI/ARC to be the only way of having the TV drive the audio channel. But then, maybe they figure that people should update their receivers by now? That would leave more than a few of us out in the cold.

Betting typo. Hoping, actually.

IF that's the deal breaker for you (the gaming thing), then so be it. But the more I look at this, the more I'm worried that Sonys will end up with LG's idea of PQ (which I'm disappointed with) and viewing angle (which I similarly do not like). If 3D isn't something you want, and if you don't think you'll use that "dual play" (or whatever Sony calls it---"dual play" is LG's name), then I wouldn't risk it frankly until I saw some major reviews on it. And not from Consumer Reports.

Ship date is April 23. My pickup date will be somewhat later after I see the set in action, and a few reviews, and the bug shakeouts and software upgrades, etc

More important to me is to wait until after the price reduction - when I dunno.

I was going to get the hx750 until I saw the W802 and decided to wait. I would have preferred the hx850 to the hx750 but 1,500 was my budget.

At 1,999 for the W802 I could get the hx850 instead.

I saw the W900 price as $3,199 but I'm fairly certian it will be $2,999 whenever if becomes available

Anybody have any idea when prices eventually come down ? I haven't bought a set in like 10 years.

And what ever happenned to the year-end deals ? There are some but they seem few and far between and only available to the quick and lucky it seems.

I'm not really thrilled with this "one price everywhere" thing with Samsung, Sony, etc. either

Eddie Antar we need you now more than ever.

Use camelcamelcamel.com (or their plugin) to see the Amazon price history for most models. (LG models are largely blocked for some reason). But if you look the price history for similar sony 2012 models, you'll see that their prices pretty much hold for a month and a half before s.l.o.w.l.y descending.

Fine by me. Until Moth Eye, and whatever else comes down the pike, is available cheaply, I'll take a matte screen anyday.

2012 was the year of the freaking mirror-like TV. Hopefully we'll see that particular tide turn soon. One way or the other.
