Well, I got a longer screw driver and tore the projector apart.
I took out the lens filter and reseated it.
I don't get the grinding gear noise, anymore, but the red light is still flashing.
The fan seems pretty quite and, eventually, shuts off.
I'm guessing there is still something, at play.

Whoohoo...
I have light!!!
The one thing that made a difference seems to be placing the glass part of the filter completely over the lens.
On other page, it said that it shouldn't make a difference where the filter is.
The theory was that it would move back and forth in it's test sequence.

It's been about a week and half since I cleaned my 1080UB up,
No sign of trouble after another 40 hours so I treated her to a fresh new lamp today ($154)

Looks like new again :)

Transformers Age of Extinction
1080p rip on a flash drive a friend gave me,
playing on my XBOX One Media Player...

120" screen is about 8'-9" wide

Sorry, didn't have time to pull out my usual camera,
these are straight uploads direct from my Samsung Galaxy S6

:)
I just got this projector used for $200. I picked up a new bulb as well. Your settings/calibrations look amazing, any chance you could post them here? If it's not too much trouble. Thanks!

Consider buying a 3rd party bulb next time (if you ever need one). My original Epson bulb died way too soon (around 500 hours) so I've replaced it with a $30 eBay bulb. It's been running over 200 hours now and I've noticed no difference compared to the original. Saved me $120

I don't know that there are many of us left that this info will be of benefit
but I noticed stereomandan's calibration images are gone from his old posts.

I recently swapped in a new lamp (number 5)
and thought I would upload my settings for calibrating Natural Mode, low lamp setting.
Thanks for sharing.
I've been asking about the pictures for the first post in his tutorial too but I guess he doesn't have them anymore :(
Did you use HCFR and his calibration method?
I'm new to this so any help is welcome.
I really need more light than the Natural mode so I want to use a Theater Black mode (called Cinema Day and Cinema Night on my TW2000) but he specifically says you should NOT use those. Any idea why?

My 1080 ub refused to turn on last night - is like the unit is not getting power. Anyone have any thoughts?

I am suspecting after ~8 years of flawless service it is time put the mighty 1080ub to pasture.

Sometimes a power cycle does the trick.
If that doesn't work, the filter may need changing (or cleaning?).:)

It is beyond that I think. Literally nothing happens when I try turn it on - no different than trying to turn it on when it is unplugged.

:crying::crying::crying:Then maybe it's the lamp?
I'm not too sure if the fan still turns on when you have a blown lamp.
But then, it might be as simple as a blown fuse?

The bulb going does not prevent the unit form powering up - I even tried changing the bulb just to make sure. No go. Took it apart, I too thought about a fuse, but there are none that I can see. I think she be dead.

If you think it's dead, and there's no experienced repair guy in the area, then there's no harm in digging deeper. Mayne not into the electronics, but at least into the electrical side. i.e. trace from the power plug into the innards, to see if you can see something that looks wrong - burnt/over heated component, broken wire, etc.

A TV technician friend of mine fixed a TV by removing a very fried mouse which had strayed inside the cabinet and across some HV wires.

I have occasionally fixed something myself by just pulling the thing apart and using my eyes and logic.
Good Luck.:D

I have an issue with mt 1080 epson projector with a new avpre i bought?
It worked perfect with my old marantz 7005 pre beforethe new one which is a Marantz av7702, I get
nothing but some very light flashes like its trying to lock on but can't?
I can run straight from a source to the epson and it works fine but as soon as I inject the 7702 nothing.
Now if I use a small 13"lcd monitor it works wonderful.
Any ideas or help would be appriciated BELIEVE ME!
Maybe HDCP issues?:(
