"Official" I Need Help Thread

I have been parusing this forum for about a week now. I have learned a lot I must say. However, I am no closer to making a decision than a week prior.

I am upgrading for 2 reasons: 7.1 channels & Newer Audio Codecs. So, I need a reciever with HDMI inputs that receive LPCM audio and will matrix 5.1 PCM to 6.1 or 7.1. Also, HDMI 1.3 and onboard Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD decoding preferred. The onboard decoders are not a must, but would be nice.

I have researched the following:
Sony STR-DG910 (Not sure if it meets my requirements)
Yamaha RX-V659 (No HDMI in's...so NO)
Yamaha RX-V661(customer support told me that it would receive LPCM, but would not play in Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD. That is contrary to what some folks here say.)
Onkyo TX-SR605 (Close, but will not matrix to 6.1/7.1, overheating and the notorious hum are a BIG CONCERN)
Onkyo TX-SR705 (Gettin pricey here. It is a match IMO)

Other thoughts, aside from prerequisites sound is obviously important. I hear the Yamahas are bright and harsh. I have heard that Onkyos do not sound as good as Yamaha. I have heard no comments about Sony sound.

Open ended comments and suggestions are most welcomed!!!!

No, it's not, the first sentence is contradictory. It has no onboard TrueHD/DTS-HD decoders. However, it can receive such decoded to LPCM by a player. So, it can "play in" Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD...since those are only ways to pack LPCM anyway.

Looks like you need the 705 if you want onboard decoding. If not, the 661 will do the job.

So does that make the Onkyos "brighter and harsher"? You can see what nonsense these second-hand generalizations become, I doubt you'd tell a difference in a blind test.
Gilvey, thank you for being the only first responder!

So as long as the receiver has HDMI 1.1 and can accept LPCM, I will hear the Dolby TreuHD/DTS-HD?

I am torn between:
Yamaha RX-V661 (HDMI 1.1 is a concern)
Onkyo TX-SR705 (cost/benefit a concern)

Which is the best solution for my needs? Sound quality?
Pioneer has a new receiver coming out in June if you can wait. If not then get the Onkyo 705. Also panasonic going to have a new Blu-ray player that does all internal decoding and the Yam 661 can handle that.

The lip-sync issues with the 705 are really bothersome. And in my case using an HDMI switch, will not allow for independent input preferences to sync the lip-sync

As long is it's decoded by the player, of course.

Given the above, what's your specific concern? The 661 is HDMI 1.2a, btw.

If you can afford the 705, that might cover all your bases.
In reality, just future proofing. That being said, after reading exactly what the improvements are with 1.3, they are irrelevant to me at this time.

Can someone comment on the sound difference between the 2 are?
That's the choice you have to make get one now or wait for the new receiver's. Also SQ between the 2 will depend on you set-up.
When do new receivers roll around?

Have you seen these for yourself?

The reason I ask, is that I also spend way too much time reading the forums here and personally believe that some of these 'deal killing issues' are purely down to perception of the user. I have a friend with a 705 and he loves it and if he has lip-synch issues he sure hasn't noticed. Maybe somebody with a much keener eye and a very anal attention to detail might notice though. Just like SQ, these are very much perceived values, rather than hard and fast issues that effect everyone.

I recently picked up an RX-V2700 as an open box for less than I would have paid for the RX-V661 new. A lot of places are selling the V2700 for

?

This would only be true if you player sent the decoded Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD signal. not that many players currently do that. and if you actually have media that is Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD.
