.... playing CDs is becoming a pain because, at random, during playing a song, the reproduction stops for a few seconds. Did anybody else experience this? any idea how to fix it?
How are your HDMI Outputs on the Oppo configured?

This thread mentions an issue with Sony TV's in standby still triggering HDMI handshakes - which cause momentary losses of sound. Is a Sony TV involved? If so, try unplugging the HDMI on it and see if the problem goes away.

This could also be any other equipment using CEC control too - so start with switching it OFF on all devices.

Wow, this is one of the things that one would be unable to troubleshoot by himself. There is indeed a Sony TV involved (a Z9) albeit indirectly, The OPPO output goes into a Yamaha cx-a5100 and the Sony is connected to the Yamaha rather than to the OPPO itself. Will try to unplug the Sony and see if it improves things.

Yes, I'm sure it will.

Sometimes I will just turn my Sony Z9D on, but mute the screen to black (there's a display OFF function), and PRESTO, no audio interruptions!

Can somebody give me any clue troubleshooting a problem? I use the 203 for CD / SACD playback and playing movie, mostly UHD blu rays disks. Movie playback works fine but lately playing CDs is becoing a pain because, at random, during playing a song, the reproduction stops for a few seconds. I tried to clean the laser lens but it did not help. Movie playback works regularly which would let me believe it is not a reader problem as I believe the data density is much higher on an UHD blu ray CD. Did anybody else experience this? any idea how to fix it?

Cheers
Do you have a newer Sony TV, and do you have the TV Off while playing these CDs? If so test by leaving the TV On and see if the problem goes away. This is a known issue with these Sonys generating bogus HDMI traffic while “off”. The workaround is to leave the Sony On, and use the button on its remote to black out its screen.

Bob is correct. Most of the 2017 Sony TV's do have that problem. I have been working with Sony for at least 6 months on this with no luck. Further, it's documented that the power usage spikes each time the HDMI ports on the TV's looks for attached devices.

Since you have a Yamaha receiver, check your remote. My Yamaha TSR-7810 remote has a button called "HDMI OUT." That button turns off the HDMI outputs 1 or 2 or 1 and 2 if you have more than one on your unit. By turning off the HDMI outputs, the handshakes will not occur. It saves having to turn on the TV to use power.

Best of luck.

I just wanted to post an interim update on my situation. I learned my existing 45-foot HDMI cable had an apparent maximum capability of 4K/30, as that was the maximum I could see when testing the various resolutions using the Apple TV 4K. I know the Apple TV 4K has an automatic cable test option, but when I tried using it, I saw some brief flashing, then the screen went blank. I had to power-cycle the Apple TV to get a picture back. I have ordered a 50-foot Ruipro hybrid HDMI cable, and will test it before installing in the conduit. I just didn't see the point in continuing until I know I have a solid cable run that works in excess of 4K/30.

I took the advice to simplify, but there has not yet been conclusive evidence of any particular device at fault. Frankly, it is very frustrating, but I also created a spreadsheet to track my testing, as it was getting too confusing. Once the new cable is installed, I will continue with the testing.

Update #2

Executive Summary
I thought my matrix switch was defective due to its inability to pass through [email protected] Hz, but it turns out it was just incapable of providing enough power (5 VDC, 50 mA) for my Ruipro 50-foot hybrid fiber cable. I purchased an HDMI voltage inserter at the source end of the Ruipro 50-foot cable, and the Apple TV 4K works fine through the matrix switch, and prompts to "Enable Dolby Vision". This device was simply the easiest to test, because it automatically tests the HDMI video path capabilities when it is restarted.

Background
After Monoprice ignoring my support ticket for two weeks, I called them. They said they switched to a new computer tracking system and were behind on emails. I explained the situation in detail, and they are clearly knowledgeable techhies. They had me perform some troubleshooting, including various EDID settings and connecting only one source and one display. They stated that sources can sometimes cause feedback that prevents the switch from working properly. There was no change in the behavior of the switch, so I called them back and set up the RMA, but they were out of stock until late September.

While waiting, I started thinking about what I could do to try and force EDID, in case the switch was not at fault. I started following along in the HDFury Vertex thread, as that device can force EDID. One of the users there has the same Ruipro 50-foot hybrid fiber HDMI cable, and a Vertex, and he posted about issues he was having. One of the troubleshooting steps recommended by Vertex support was to use an HDMI voltage inserter, because he said those types of cables have a chip inside that usually requires external power, but the manufacturers don't provide those to keep costs down.

I looked them up, and they were $10, comes only with the cable, no power supply, so I figured that is cheap enough to try it out. It came yesterday, and I used one of my extra Amazon Fire HD tablet power supplies (5 VDC, 1.0A), and boom, it worked right away with the Apple TV 4K. I still need to finish testing with OPPO UDP-203 and the Nvidia Shield, but at least I know the switch works and those sources may just require more settings, EDID tweaks, or yes...cable changes. Note that I had set the switch back to the default EDID (passthrough video and audio) during the final testing, so I just might need to play around to coax the other sources to send 4K through the switch.

Interesting to implement new features now when customers can't buy one. And they usually never talk about it....
Say you just bought a HDR10+ tv and never had Oppo in your sight before.

Wish they focus on perfect media playback instead over network, SMB, DNLA and such now that disc playback is pretty much perfect. I once in a while get that the Oppo freezes when playing files over SMB. Need to hard reboot the whole thing.

There is also that subtitles dimming function we long for that panasonic have. Can't be harder than HDR10+ to implement.

OPPO.........Tone MAPPING....... FIX..........PLEEEEEASE! :D
I think we all have our favorites to be implemented. One of the most impressive things I saw was after having bought an 83 in the wayback time, they kept implementing new features (DVD-A, DLNA, etc... ) and keeping it current long after I had bought it. Without charging extra.

Now that they've stopped selling the players, to plan ANY new features never mind very complex ones is amazing. Most companies would have run out of Dodge.

Anyways, my next desired feature is DV through the HDMI input. There... I said it.

I guess we will see multiple FW updates this and next year before they cease the 20x support for good. I have a feeling they will fix the tone mapping eventually. People must be going crazy when we some day see the "final" FW with all fixes and they also close the BDMW folder playback etc. loopholes :D.

Keep in mind that some features and bug fixes are fully within Oppo's control, while others require partners (most often MediaTek) to take action before Oppo can implement their piece. It's quite likely that fixing tone mapping requires some involvement from MediaTek and that could easily be what is delaying a fix. While waiting for them, it's perfectly reasonable to get other stuff done. Hopefully Oppo will be able to make most of us happy in the end. DV support on the HDMI input may not be possible - IIRC, they haven't said absolutely not, but have said that it doesn't seem likely.

Thanks for this info. I've taken Bytehoven advice and mirrored the settings on the Oppo. However I can't on the projector b/c I've got the Epson 5040. Can anyone with the Oppo 203/Epson 5040 PJ share your 5040 image setup? Thx
Just sent you a PM!

Encouraging to hear FW updates may materialize.

So with the 203 in high demand on the resale market, what are everyone's main reasons for hanging onto them?

So far I feel like the DVD / 480i (esp. non film based material) playback, from disc or file, is about as good as it gets with the 203. I've got quite a few DVD concert rips in this format.

I don't see much difference - if any - with 1080 or 4K playback of MKVs however (-vs- a Shield, for example).

The fact that it will play Dolby Atmos / Tru HD via MKV / network is a huge plus also - though the Shield will do that also, but not many (any?) other BR players.

The HDMI input is nice, but not sure it does a lot for me until the tone mapping is rectified through a FW fix.

The android app is nice, as you can navigate network shares etc... and change video settings w/out interrupting playback in many cases.

Just curious what others' reasons are for not turning loose of their 203.

For me it's because there isn't another player that can play just about everything like the 203 can. I want my TrueHD off MKV files to play. The Sony X800 I have won't do it and I'm not sure if any newer players are going to support it either.

I'm not into streaming much either so the 203 fits the bill perfectly.
