Sigh... just wanted to share here too, miy player was the ub420.. just after 2 weeks of receiving it I had to take it back to Amazon. The thing became full of bugs and I was not used to that with my sony x700. Sometimes HDR was off out of nowhere, specially trying to force trough ycbcr 4:4:4, which does not happens with the sony. I had to change HDMI cables but nothing. But what really made me worried I got a defective unit was the unresponsiveness I was getting more and more when turning it on, it just locked itself in starting for a long while and then shut down. Reading online my guess is the infamous F99 error, but since this model doesn’t have a display seeing this message was not possible. It took me to the point I was not enjoying the thing anymore, I felt anxious thinking what else I may encounter each time I used it, the sony at least gave me reliability.
I wonder if it had to do with the fact that I had it connected to an UPS terminal, which I always shut down and unplug every night to save energy. Although again, my sony didn’t gave me troubles for it neither. I may consider buying another again, hoping I got a fluke. But I don’t know. I just lost confidence in the brand. What do you think?

Since your experience is not typical, I’d give it another shot. IMHO, Panasonic offers the best disc spinner currently available

Just hit Top Menu twice on the home screen while the disc is in and it will boot up. I not have a ton of region B disc's but the few I have all work using this method. No hack or mod, my unit was bought new at Bestbuy and is not altered
I'll have to try this method since it is similar to what @coffeecup45 posted. This is more of a stop/menu trick which I have used and works for my 9000. I have not tried either of these methods on the 820 since that unit was purchased for a family member.

I may order a 820 now. Just a question

I recently learned that even if you have the HDR optimizer set to off, you can adjust dynamic range, brightness and white and black tone curves. Given that when I had my player HDR optimizer at ON made my HDR projector to look dimmer and therefore less exciting for my taste. What if I just leave the optmizer at off and just fine tune the sliders, just to bring some of those details back without sacrificing the overall brightness of the image? Wouldnt that be some kind of optimization too?

I dunno, this was my first BR player but I've been extremely disappointed with mine too. Same complaints, very buggy and a severe lack of customer support in both contact with Panasonic and in f/w updates. Still waiting for this supposed latest update to hit my player - it's been months of listening to the buzz that it hit other countries first. I was really hoping this latest version would help with all the bugs but I can't tell until I'm able to get it. My Oppo DVD player was mint, never skipped a beat and never failed to play a disk. I'm convinced bluray is a different more complex media but everyone with Oppo BR players are very happy still. I missed the Oppo train for the BR, procrastinated too long and I never heard that they stopped producing until I went to buy one.

Having said this, I too shut down power to the unit when finished. Although, I believe it creates for a much longer lag on start-up - I don't feel it would account for all the normal functionality of the unit. If anything, you'd think it would help since there is always a lot of talk about resetting the unit to address issues. Regardless, a high end theater store I spoke to said they refuse to push the Panasonics now due to complaints. They are pushing Sony for high-end now, saying the customer support is far better and the product is not full of glitches. I understand that maybe Panasonic seems to be said to have the best image, but at what cost?

Exactly my feelings. How can I enjoy my purchase if there’s little reliability. Basically 50/50 chance you could get a defective product. In that case I tend to prefer a bit inaccuracy but a player that made me forget about issues.

Hello everybody,
I am in a need of little help here! I am trying to calibrate my sony xf90 using the uhd bemchmark from spears&munsil.
I end up with best result(with the evaluation) setting the colour space to RGB standard and 10 bit priority(no channels clipping, acceptable banding and overall the best results)
Has anyone here similar results?does it make sense to output RGB or will the tv reconvert to 422?

This is a disc player. If you appreciate AV, don't bother with it for streaming apps. Use an apple TV. Something that gives native frame rate and Atmos. You will never get native frame rate from the Panasonic apps. You may get Atmos.
Didn’t realise this. What about the amazon 4K fire stick, is this native or only Apple TV?
Thanks

Does anyone have the HEX IR codes for these operations? I'd like to add them to my Pronto TSU9400.
I can't export the hex codes from my URC CCP software, but I did find out that the Quick Replay hex code from the old Panasonic DVD-F87 works on the UB820. Doing a quick Google search for Quick Replay Panasonic hex code returned this result:

0000 0070 0000 0032 0080 0040 0010 0010 0010 0030 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0030 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0030 0010 0030 0010 0010 0010 0030 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0030 0010 0030 0010 0010 0010 0030 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0030 0010 0030 0010 0030 0010 0010 0010 0030 0010 0030 0010 0030 0010 0010 0010 0010 0010 0ac3

I plugged that into the URC remote, and it worked, so it would probably work for your Pronto too.

Good luck,

Scott

Is the 820 going to be updated/refreshed this fall ?

Doubtful especially since no one showed Blu-ray players at CES.

Thanks Scott. I had been using a macro I made-up to do the 'replay'. This works better. BTW if you haven't found it already, there is a code for the '60 sec +' command in DVD[139] [PANASONIC 4] named CM SKIP.

I use an Amazon Firestick. The Firestick has a display setting for either Native or converting everything to Dolby Vision. My calibrator recommended Naive, since Dolby Vision just added more processing to the picture.

Didn’t realise this. What about the amazon 4K fire stick, is this native or only Apple TV?
Thanks

So I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen with their 820?

I've had the issue with Planet Earth 2 where the player will say it's outputting HDR, but my TV doesn't recognize it as HDR and stays in SDR mode. I read that that was a glitch with that one disc that's somewhat well known.

However, tonight I just had it happen on both Arrival and BR2049. Both times, the player info showed HDR, but the TV wasn't in HDR mode. In the case of both of them they were in HDR on the top-level menu but initially starting the movie the TV dropped back to SDR. I had to either restart the player and resume (BR2049) or just going to the top-level menu and selecting a scene further into the movie worked (Arrival) - at which point I could pull up the pop-up menu and go back to the beginning.

Are these two other known problem discs or is my player going completely flakey? Maybe something else in the chain? My 820 is feeding a Denon 820 and then to my LG C9. Thanks if anyone has any info to share.
