Yes,that is the UT50. We (Sears) are not getting the ST50 in stores this year, online only. You can also tell by the lack of the louvre filter. The screen is slightly washed out especially when the tv fades to black screen, blacks are greyish due to heavy lighting. Else it is a really nice entry level tv.

Wow. Not carrying the ST50 in the store is bad for Sears, bad for Panasonic, and bad for Customers. The ST series with it's excellent AR Filter displays much better in a bright store environment than the reflective filterless U or UT series, especially considering that the ST50's new AR Filter is said to be even better than last year's ST30 filter in a bright environment.

The ST series was the best bang for the buck TV in 2011. Is Sears now moving away from quality products and focusing on entry level products like KMart? Dumb move by whomever made that decision.

Oh i know and agree heavily. I bring it up about every time i work on the company forum that we need to have at least one ST50 in store to show customers the differences and benefits. Aside from the better brightness and filter, the ST50 is a better value w/ built-in wifi and additional inputs. Many customers want wifi nowadays and considering we do not sell Panasonics stick in store, they typically walk from the product. We do have a belkin usiversal wifi adapter for tvs but most people prefer first party over third party.

I think they're looking at the fact that the really cheap 720p and entry 1080p plasmas were the ones that sold best, along with the D550 samsung for a 3D plasma. The ST30 nation wide did not sell so hot, although in both stores i worked at we sold them like crazy. We are currently left with huge overstock of 55 st30's nationally (i received 17 of them in early jan, got down to 4, and then received 4 more on shipment). They're probably using the st30 sales figures to predict st50s sales and figure the unit will not be worth it to carry. Better off having something similar to the D550, which is why we have the UT50. Im carrying half the number of plasmas as i did last year, which is a real bummer.

The above is only a guess as to why we are doing what we did, but that's the type of response i got when we dropped 1080p 42" plasmas last year because the 42" S2 was not a hot seller. We'll still be carrying higher end LEDs, aside from stuff offered in MHT (though very few select stores will get real high end stuff like the 84" LG LED).

EDIT: Looks like i was correct with my assumption above. Here's what AVJunkie said at HDJ, "sears doesn't carry st50 in store. Cause they couldn't even sell st30 well as a whole. Most likely ut50 as its the only pdp they were sent.. Again why he said 55 st series for $1000 .. Seems he maybe a little confused "

Just the latest in what seems to be an endless string of dumb decisions by a once great retailer and an iconic symbol in America. Sad.

Wow, no ST50 for sears? Will you guys still carry the GT50? Or is the UT as high as Sears is going this year? If so, that's a bummer...I put up a UT in my store and still prefer the ST30 we have on display...the UT just doesn't look good under bright store lights.

I'm assuming BB will get the UT and ST, maybe a variant of the GT, although at our store the GT31 didn't sell well at all because we have a Magnolia where the GT30 was always significantly cheaper.

It seems like Panasonic have poor distribution relations just in general. Not really sure what the problem is--low sales, low margins, unwillingness to work with retailers on excess stock? It sounds like Best Buy only barely relented to stocking the ST50 this year--GT/VT are obviously a no-go. Club stores are capping out at an ST variant. Sears is stopping at the UT. I expect regionals like HHGregg will see similar model range trimming. It just keeps getting worse and worse YoY. I wouldn't be surprised to see these stores drop them entirely in the next year or two, or perhaps limit to the lowest of the low range (e.g. X, C, U).

Well concerning BB, there are plenty of stores that have a Magnolia inside...these stores will undoubtedly stock Panasonic's entire range - UT/ST from the BB inventory and GT/VT from Magnolia - the same way it was in 2011. 2010 was the last year that "core" BB home theater got a model from every line, although we only carried a 50" VT and no GT25.

Has anyone see the ST50 in person? Does the screen have a greenish tint when the TV is off like the previous Panasonic plasmas?

Mine just arrived a about half an hour ago... if there is a greenish tint it is very slight, and only visible to me if I have light shining directly into the screen... but your mileage may vary.

Have not really done much with it yet, still needs to have dust/particles cleaned off the screen, and then I am letting it sit until D-Nice has time to provide some guidance as what (if any procedures) will be used for these sets.

Problem is there are still plenty of states without a single MHT BB--11 to be exact based on their website. This of course ignores regions that, while technically in serviced states, are hours away from MHT branded location(s). Point was their B&M distribution is poor in general and has been getting worse every year--it's not just limited to Sears.

The website specs say the HDMI inputs are on the side. What exactly do they mean by side? Surely the cable connections wouldn't be visible from the viewing position, right?

They won't. Usually they're on the left 3rd of the set (facing front of panel). Probably 12" or so from the inputs to the edge of the bezel. Very rough estimate but you won't be able to see it. The inputs are still on the back, positioned facing sideways instead of straight back so cables lay flat instead of sticking straight out from the back. Makes it better for wall mounting.

This is all just theory as I've never seen the ST50 input panel, but I've seen all kinds of other models with "Inputs on the Side" and they are like this.

Here's a pic of the VT30 inputs. The edge of the panel extends several inches out of the right of the pic before the edge.

Layout is fairly similar to what Pothog posted.... minus an HDMI + a USB.

From attachement, the panel extends approximately 3 more inches beyond the USB stick that is in USB 1.

Thanks Domain. Would it be possible for you to post a few pics of the set for the thread? Maybe even get added to the first post? Not sure if there's been any owners pics yet. At least I haven't seen any yet!

Thanks!

Well, Fry's has the 55 inch ST50 in their weekly ad. Can't tell you the price as that's forbidden but it's not MSRP. I hope to swing by tomorrow after work and check out the picture and bezel to see if I might pick it up.

Sorry, my camera is producing absolutely terrible pictures right now... the lighting in the room it is sitting in temporarily is not helping either. I'll try to get some better pictures (with a better camera) once I have time to move everything into the theater room.

*Edit* Found one of my other cameras, changed front picture to be a little more clear.

Well, It is finally here. Going to get the competition now from another manufacturer. Here is a quick pic to get everything started. Chad B is in route ! We waited to bring this ST50 in, so we could have another manufacturer to compare the Panasonic too.
Sweet! Do we get to know what panel it's going up against?

Chris, are you doing a break in first? Things can change during the first hundred or so hours until the panel is somewhat stabilized.

Thanks. I certainly wouldn't call those side inputs even though they insert from the side of that raised section. Probably lost something in the translation from Japanese to English.

My Panny 58" 800U is dying and I need a new set. Costco here in the Great White North has the 65" ST30 for $2k. Assuming the best price I will be able to find will be at least $500 more (for at least a few months) is it worth holding out for the ST50? Any advice?

I don't really care about the internet features - just TV, movies and gaming.
