Edit: This information pertains to the most recent FW upgrade (2-22-07) for the following model Samsung TV's:
FW Ver. 1024: LN-S4096D, 4696D, 5296D;
FW Ver. 1026: LN-S4095D, 4695D.
Features:
1.
JustScan This is an additional selection which is added to the PICTURE SIZE menu. It enables 1:1 pixel mapping (0% overscan) only on the HDMI inputs and only when receiving 1080i or 1080p video. It will be "grayed out" when using any other inputs, including the NTSC/ATSC/(QAM 96D models) tuner, and when receiving 720p video on the HDMI inputs. (Many new FW users set their satellite/cable boxes to output only 1080i video for this reason.)
2.
1080p24 The ability to display 24fps HD dvd player output is added and will show as such on the OSD of the TV.
3.
HDMI/HDCP Device Interoperability Issues HDMI/HDCP device incompatibilities are further addressed, with no one any longer reporting problems with these Samsung models. This has been an ongoing process, with many previous FW versions. See below to check your own FW version.
Additional Notes:
1. You should record any custom settings, since the new FW may not retain them.
2. You do not need to remove the CableCard from 96D models while performing the upgrade, if you have one installed.
3. The 1024 FW upgrade for xx96D models and the 1026 FW upgrade for 4x95D models now have a
permanent home . (5296D owners - the file labeled "4x96D" applies to your model as well.) Doubleclicking on the downloaded file will cause it to extract 1 folder and 7 files, which you should then transfer to a clean FAT (FAT16) or FAT32 USB flash drive. Do
NOT use a flash drive device that is suspect in any way. You would be well-advised to re-format the drive in FAT (FAT16) just to eliminate any possible problems. (Right-click the USB drive under My Computer, select "Format," select "FAT" from the drop-down window.) If you transfer the original file to the USB drive and run the self-extraction there, leaving the original file on the USB drive, it will not affect the upgrade. The exact size of the download file is 15.4 MB (16,172,032 bytes). The exact total size of the extracted folder, containing 6 files, and the other 7 files is 16.4 MB (17,273,038 bytes). (1024 FW example)
WARNING!!! You use these files and follow the upgrade procedures at your own risk. Some have reported that the JustScan picture mode does not work perfectly with their devices when inputting 1080p video, which does NOT appear to be related to the manufacture date of their main boards. (16:9 mode is not affected and 1080i works perfectly in both modes.) Some have reported that after multiple attempts their TV's will not upgrade, which does NOT appear to be related to the build date of their TV's. (The previous FW is then retained and a new board and service call are required.) Read the posts. No one has reported any problems on this thread with any improper operation of their TV's after the FW upgrade when
not using the JustScan option. There does appear to be a 1%
increase in the current ~2% overscan to ~3% when
not in JustScan mode.
NOTE: Our experience is that if an antenna has never been connected to the ANTENNA input and an AUTO PROGRAM in the AIR mode performed, this should be accomplished prior to the upgrade in order that there is at least one NTSC channel programmed into memory in the CHANNEL MANAGER. (MENU > CHANNEL > CHANNEL MANAGER > ALL, (ANTENNA set to AIR)) Almost any type of antenna will work to find one local NTSC channel.
(2010 Edit: Since there are no longer any OTA analog channels broadcasting, use the following alternative method to place an analog channel in the CHANNEL MANAGER, and tune to this channel prior to performing the upgrade.) Alternatively, you may be able to simply enter TV-AIR mode with NO antenna connected, tune to say Ch 4 with the remote, click the ADD/DEL button on the remote, and then select ADD to put an NTSC channel into the CHANNEL MANAGER memory. Either way, those who received the "Same Version" error message during the first stage of the FW install have found that this procedure enables a successful upgrade.
Do not expect Samsung to warranty your in-warranty TV if you manage to screw this up. I have flashed hundreds of network devices without incident, but there was that
one that crashed a Linksys router to an unrecoverable state. There was
one instance reported here of this FW upgrade causing permanent difficulty with a TV due to the use of a known-to-be-suspect USB drive and
another , which as of the edit date has a cause of failure
yet to be determined . Please keep in mind that these FW upgrades have been successfully installed hundreds, if not thousands, of times, but nothing is perfect! If you decide to have a local tech install this FW upgrade, do NOT allow extraneous glue to be removed from the panel/board interface cable if your TV is otherwise operating normally. This is a separate "intermittent video" service memorandum
unrelated to this FW upgrade! In fact, a number of
FW upgrade mistakes made by local tech's have been reported.
If there is
anything you don't understand, ask for help
before proceeding. Disclosing that you have installed this FW yourself, even though the installation was successful, would obviously be unwise.....
You can find a detailed recap of our experience to date with both the 4x95D and xx96D FW upgrades

WARNING REGARDING THE LN-Sxx9xD SERVICE MENU
First time visitors to this thread should be aware that when examining the options in the Service Menu it is
extremely easy to accidentally select an option which will recalibrate the current input, such that it will become useless without proper recalibration, requiring a specialized signal generator of Korean manufacture and a specialized test pattern. At a minimum, do not play around in the SM on a video input you think you will ever need. It's that easy. Ask for help in this thread before making any adjustments on your own. There are people here who can help you
