I bought the 40A550 at Best Buy this week (couldn't pass it up, 2 years interest free). My model has an 'S' on the end, and didn't come with any sticker on the set.

bigtiny50, how long exactly is a 'long time'? My old Sony took a few seconds to click on, but then the TV 'warmed up' with the image slowly fading in. Perhaps the TV is just 'warming up' so the picture can just come straight on.

I picked up a 46" A550 this weekend at BB. I had an old Mits 55 WS RPTV in the basement for the kids and the HD board went bad. So better to just buy a new tv. So, since it was for the kids, I wanted LCD (I have a Pioneer Plasma in the family room). I prefer plasma, but again, for image retention factors, an LDC fit the kids better. So, I wanted a Sony. Always has Sony's and they've always lastedmore than 10 years without issues. But the kids don't need such a good tv nor would it really matter to them. So I decided on a Sharp. Went to BB and no 46" Sharp. Looked at the Sony and liked it. Then I looked at a Panny plasma but decided no. There standing right in front of me was a 46" Sammy box. I looked up and wow, I was surpised. I went back and forth between the Sony and Sammy. I remember reading a few things about it but never really too notice because I'm generally like Sammy products. Well, I'm a believer with this tv. It's fantastic. Picture quality is excellent, even std. digital braodcasts. Yes, the sound does leave someting to be desired, but that doesn't bother me or the kids. I can always hook up a stereo. I'd rather have a quality picture than good built in sound. Sammy put the money where it counted. Menus are nice and pretty intuitive. Very sleak and clean look to the TV. My wife even loved it. So overall, I'm very happy and now that I'm reading all these corroborating threads, I feel even better about my purchase.

Oh, it's hooked up to a FIOS DVR via HDMI.

Well I finally took the plunge and bought the LN46A550, should be arriving next week!

I have a slightly off topic question about my sound setup; eventually I'll be getting a receiver and surround speakers, but I need to take some time to research (and save up). Since most seem to say that the speakers on this tv are sub-par, I'm probably going to use my Klipsch Promedia 2.1 computer speakers for now. The only thing is that they just have stereo mini-plug as the only input. Right now I just have them running from my tvs headphone jack and it sounds fine. Does anyone who has a LN550 use the headphone jack to connect to computer speakers? Or should I use an adapter to hook them up to the audio out jacks?

When I first got the LCD the picture would come on as soon as I turn it on with the sound. Since last week it takes about 3 minutes for the actual picture to show even with the sound coming through instantly. If need be I can take it back b/c I have warranty but wanted to see if anyone was experiencing this same issue.

Out of curiosity, does your model number have an "A" or and "S" at the end? Did it come with the sticker on the front panel? I ask because mine is an "A" with no sticker and I bought mine from bestbuy. Thanks.

Mine has a sticker on the left edge of the front panel highlighting all the features like HDMI,contrast ... it just says series 5 and 550. there isn't A or S at the end.

^ It's on the back of the panel. Should be a white sticker with the model and stuff on it. After the model number, there should be either an A or an S a few spaces out, by it self.

Didn't even think about that. Called and found out that my card does offer it. Thanks for the tip, it gives me an extra year of warranty.

American Express does the same thing. I warranties your TV for 1 additional year at the end of the manufacturer's warranty.

So do nothing, and get 2 years.

And don't forget American Express also gives you the first 90 days accidental damage, I believe it's up to $1000.

Just save the original receipt.

Does your laptop have a DVI/HDMI port? If so, does it have an audio controller (if you take a peak in device manager, you should see an HDMI audio device if you have it).

You can also use the VGA port, if you don't have DVI.

As for 5.1 audio, you can only do it if your graphics controller can do HDMI audio or if your laptop has an optical output. Assuming you have one of them, it should be pretty easy. If you don't, you'll have to settle for stereo sound, or you'll have to buy an external soundcard or something.

Thanks for the response clicq

my laptop has only VGA port, do i need to compromise on video quality now as i do not have optical output on my laptop i understood i need to settle with stereo
.

Also on the device manager under sound, audio and game controller ... i see sigma tel high def audio codec. Here is it safe to assume my laptop can decode HD audio.

Most people say yes, but I didn't find any difference.

nothing matters unless you notice it. HDMI is better, but if you are not going to see the difference, do not bother. I have a buddy who wants a hdmi 360 just for the sake of it, and he cant even tell the difference between composite and component. HDMI cables are so cheap nowadays it is almost a no brainer to just use them. Again, any setting or connetion is a waste if YOU are not going to benefit from it.

Can anyone tell me if PQ is noticeably better with hdmi cable as opposed to component. My cable box is hooked up with component cables. The picture is nice but can it be better?

For a cable box, I would leave it at component. HDMI is a true digital connection, and is more prone to show weaknesses in your cable signal, like compression and such.
