Alrighty. I've taken some photos to compare input lag on various modes. Here you go!

HDMI - No Label Name - 42 ms lag

HDMI - PC Label Name - 32 ms lag

HDMI - Game Mode - 20 ms lag

VGA - No Input Label - 0 ms lag

It's obvious VGA is the superior mode for gaming as there's absolutely no lag at all. HDMI in game mode is acceptable, except you cannot adjust backlight or sharpness, which absolutely kills the image =(. Also naming the HDMI input PC apparently shaves off 10 ms of lag from the processing for some reason.

Can you give details on your test? (connections, etc) Thanks for the VERY interesting information!

Yea. I hooked my laptop up to the tv using both vga and hdmi with a clone setting (same image on both screens) and then switched between modes while taking pictures with my camera with the shortest exposure time.

I think I'm gonna buy the 360 vga adapter and hook both hdmi and vga up to the tv. Switch to vga for gaming and hdmi for movies.

The price is a bit high, but it's worth it to me if it works. Have you used it or do you know someone who has used it with satisfactory results?

Thanks for your help!!!

I believe I have seen the Felston unit in action. The client was happy with it.

If it was me I would consider upgrading to a receiver with this functionality.

I am still amazed at the results not only on my display but also what Jeff did for my audio.

Thanks for your report. I've included it in the list for flat panels that's linked at the bottom of my post.

If anyone knows of other owner reports about having their displays professionally calibrated please let me know where they are so that I can include them.

Follow up to my post above:

HDMI in the second HDMI port with the label PC results in the SAME amount of lag as VGA: THAT MEANS 0 MS LAG! Awesome. The only problem is no AMP. But that's a compromise, because VGA also has no amp.

Much easier than switching back and forth from vga to hdmi, though.

The current Panasonic plasma's are so bad I will not work on them. The color is very poor on those displays compared to what is possible on these units.

I noticed that you listed a tremendous 3600:1 CR for the 650, have you ever calibrated a 71 series? If so, was it more like 1600:1 or 2000:1 with your equipment or was it higher?

I have a Felston DD540 which has 2 digital audio inputs/outputs (Toslink & coax). If you're interested PM me.

ok i have a weird problem...it seems that the color on my tv is fading in and out. When i have the Comcast guide up the movie listings are clearly colored purple, like they should be. For no reason when i randomly pull the guide up again the movies listings are now a dark purple, almost black. It seems like the red is missing or fading out. I can see a difference when too when i watch a movie. Today Pirates on Showtime looks a bit too green and now Jarheads is fading in and out between normal and greenish. When the movie looks a bit green i check the guide and sure enough the purple movies listing is almost black again.

Any thoughts?

Other than that the tv is great, no clouding or purple haze but his fading color thing would drive me crazy....i may have to exchange it.

Interesting test you have there...i may give the Game Mode a shot for HTPC usage.

btw> The prevailing theory on what happens when you name it PC, is that the internal scalars / deinterlacing circuitry / etc. are bypassed. This is typical for PC implementation....

That would be my set. I am still amazed at the results not only on my display but also what Jeff did for my audio. People need to just invest in this service because believe me none of the settings in the 650 calibration thread were close to these resluts. I really appreciate the fact that Jeff explained everything he was doing and why. 1000% satisfied customer.[/Q

Does 1000% make any sense from a mathematical perspective?

This purple haze has got me a bit worried. Is it a defect on all these tv's or only a select few? No way am I going to buy a 2500 tv if I see purple haze viewing it at an angle other than 90. Thoughts?

Seems like it is not wide spread among owners.

Anyone know if I can put the TV in front of a window that gets sun many hours a day.

Like this:
Code:
Code:
--wall-----[--window--]---------
                TV???

-----------------------------------
I'm in San Diego, and I think the outside temperature will never go over 95. I'm not sure if the internal temperature inside the TV will get hotter, like when you leave something in the car.

If I'm actually watching the TV the knockout blinds will be closed. But probably 90% of the day the TV will have sunlight at it's back.

My Sony CRT was in this position for many years with no ill effects.

The manual says (Page 101):

Operating Temperature: 50°F to 104°F (10°C to 40°C)

Operating Humidity: 10% to 80%, non-condensing

Storage Temperature: -4°F to 113°F (-20°C to 45°C)

Wait, just to get this straight: you ran this test a second time and found that the 2nd HDMI port (in PC mode) resulted in the same amount of lag as the VGA? (contrary to the screenshots that you've posted.)

Just want to be sure because that would be great news indeed for gamers. I'm getting my 52" set tomorrow and the first thing I will do is to run the same test as well. I'll see if I can confirm what you've said.

I just tested it and there is definately still lag on the ps3 in pc mode. It does seem to be a little better but AMP is so ideal for videogames the trade-off is not nearly worth it. What I want to know is why the game mode works? What is the television doing differently? And why can't the settings be changed in game mode? The picture is fine with me on game mode but I am just curious by nature.

After much research and many store visits I think I'm ready to buy an ln52a650. I have no doubt in my mind that during daylight hours the PQ on this TV will be exceptional. But, I do have concerns about night time viewing and what I read about eye fatigue when using an LCD. I expect this is because LCD displays are visually higher in contrast. Two of my brothers have plasma TVs and the images on their TVs are very good and easy on the eyes. With all of this now said, I'd like to hear your experiences with this TV in a very low lighted room environment for movie watching. Can adjustments to the 52a650 for watching movies in a dimly lit room be made to eliminate eye fatigue and yet retain excellent PQ (especially Black Levels and BL detail)? I am interested in all owner opinions of course but most interested in the opinions of those who have experience watching movies in these conditions with this TV and Plasma TVs.

Thanks in advance and thank you to everyone in this forum for the terrific information found here.

Would you like to share your settings? Thanks.

That is a no. It is not fair to me for paying for the service and giving it away for free. My settings would not be right for your display and room setting anyways. Not to mention it is not fair to Jeff to give his work away for free.
