Pixel orbiter is mostly mumbo jumbo.....Screen fit is the proper setting to watch TV in, during the break in period jsut watch a wide varit of programing and youll do OK. I would also avoid long periods (hours on end) of static images (TV "bugs", letterboz material, gaming).....

Good to know. I would rather view in Screen fit.

I am very glad to see this thread get started!

I am a happy new owner of the PN64F8500! I am coming from a Full array local dimming Toshiba Regza that had really nice blacks but quite a bit of blooming. This is my first Plasma so I am definitely in learning mode here.

I have been happily surprised at the picture quality, definition, shadow detail, skin tones, and whites. I pulled out Avatar 3D to give the 3D performance a test and was very pleased. My only previous experience with 3D on a TV was with a passive 3D set. The active image quality had loads of resolution. A very nice experience indeed.

After I get enough hours, I plan on dusting off the old Chroma 5 & i1one pro meters and giving a go at calibration. To my eye, the Movie mode in particular looks very close out of the box, to what it should be.

Thanks ljmart for getting this Owners Thread going.

thanks bama
glad to see ya here and thanks for contributing! this is (essentially) my first plasma also. not counting the two months i had an e7000... it definitely makes tv watching a 'new' experience!

Okay, I'm game for an 8500 owner's thread. I've been an owner for close to 2 months. Love the tv (a 51"). Ph8te, you're more than welcome to contribute anyway you can to this thread. You've been very helpful on the other 8500 thread as long as I've been active on it. Maybe one day you'll be an 8500 owner??

thanks dan! another one of the f8500 pioneers! ive had mine two months saturday

Our local Cable provider is not a "National" company and so far the HD content is rather limited, so I will use your zoom suggestion when I need to watch something that is in standard Def. Our local CBS affiliate broadcasts with a single line of white pixels showing vertically on the extreme left side of the screen. On that particular channel I will probably have to use 16:9. Other than that, Screen Fit all the way.

ooooh the anticipation! congrats, i think you will be impressed. and thanks for contributing

Yea, and this will be our first plasma also, coming from a Samsung HL-S6187 DLP. We have really like this set, but we are starting to get stuck mirrors and they look like dead pixels, they are bright white. We started with one, now up to 3 and now maybe seeing some black spots in bright scenes.

Really counting down the days until the new unit arrives. Heck I literally just went out and bought Jurassic Park 3D since Frys had such a great deal on it through today so I have something to watch in 3D when the new set arrives along with a new Sony BDP-S5100 player. (Thanks Value Electronics/Robert!!!)

It's odd that nobody has seen any change with the update. So we have no idea what it does. I still haven't gotten it yet...waiting for the OTA version.

One thing that's never been mentioned, the quality of the built-in camera. I was stunned by how good that little thing looks on my 64" 8500! The clarity and color is far better than I would have thought. Of course I have no idea what I'll do with it!

I too purchased a 60F8500 last week. Coming from a circa 2009 50B850 and before that a 2005 Panasonic 42PV500 (I think). Talk about chalk and cheese!

I'm using these settings by Kevin Miller. The 3D setting in particular is incredible! Check it out...

Where are Kevin's CMS settings? Or is just using Auto?

All his settings are on page 2 of the PDF. To be perfectly honest - I'm having trouble deciphering the figures he provided for color, but I haven't spent enough quality time trying
Eg I see no Low Red, High Red settings on my Advanced Settings menu.

Perhaps I'll post over on the calibration thread...

Picture Mode: Movie

Color Temp: Warm 2

Gamma: 0

Backlight: 16

Brightness: 47

Contrast: 95

Color: 50

Tint: G50/R50

Low Red: 22/

Low Green: 25/

High Blue: 25/3=1,4=+2,7=+2,8=3,9=2,10=+3

low is 'offset' and high is 'gain'. the other numbers are for 10 pt white balance, beginning at interval 3.
