Spent last night rebuilding my CalMAN workflow to better suit me and the Sharp. Untilled now I had been using the basic, built-in workflow and it was a bit clunky for me.

Anyway, I don't have any kids this week or weekend so I've set a goal to rebuild my day, night, and game calibrations using my new knowledge. These will be far more refined than my previous ones. I will post up the numbers as I get them.

So you are not changing the ISF modes that chad set for you, but you are going to calibrate "movie or game" mode with your new knowledge? Is that correct?

Correct. The ISF modes are locked down tighter than a whale's bum.

CGGorman, I just wanted to thank you for all of your posts. They are very informative. I purchased the LC-70LE847U because of this thread, what a great TV.

I agree this set can more or less ruin a good movie, if you look too closely at the amount of detail which it can display. I find the motion can be a little hard to follow though. I suppose I need a good calibration.

Thanks again for posting so much great info!

:) I just hope what I post is helpful and accurate. So many here (AVS) have helped me over the years without knowing it. I'm glad I finally have an opportunity to give some back.

Cg your updates have been very helpful and informative.
I have been reading this thread because I have a samsung un55d8000y and even though it was their flagship last year, I can't seem to be totally accepting of it. A lot of flashlight and bleed and I think bad input lag. I've read hardly any complaints on here about these problems. Maybe just a little clouding which can be fixed with a paint roller?! Who knew. I know this is still a new set but how would you guys compare it to a Sammy like this? I think most people will tell you sharp can't beat samsung but I'm starting to think people just get caught up in samsungs fantastic aesthetics

I looked at both Sharp and Samsung and Sony. I really wanted the Sony but at almost twice the price for a 65 inch I passed. Between Samsung and Sharp I choose the Sharp because of size and price and I am happy but for some clouding.

I am very interested to see some experiments with this paint roller and wonder if doing so would void the warranty.

This may be a stupid question but has anybody spoken to Sharp about the clouding issue? It seems to be rather prevalent and Sharp has actually replaced some sets. Why can't they engineer this problem out of the display? They can make an 80" full array 3D display and the much ballyhooed Elite but they are stumped by clouding?

I'm sure these sets are engineered to a price point...unlike the Elites. Sandwitch the crystal layer between two sheets of heavy glass and clouding is a thing of the past...and the weight goes up 20 pounds along with the cost. Internal bracing to prevent sag...$...low iron content for better color and light transmittance...$...a satin finish to minimize reflections...more $

Pick your poison situation... :)

Yes every company is looking for ways to cut cost and make their products cheaper to sell, some of them will even cut quality to make an extra buck because most people out there that buy new TV's have never heard of AVS and just go pick one out that looks good in the store, they never do any research, this in return allows the TV companies to do what they do, cut cost, cut quality and up production. I'm sure every panel installed in the factory is not "torqued" in place the same everytime, thats how you come up with screen informities.

I think Sharp does a pretty good job and they seem to be one of the best to work with when you do get a bum panel.

So is sandwiching the crystal between two layers of glass the only solution? I just wondered if anybody asked Sharp why the clouding issue is present. If you complained enough to Sharp that they replaced your set it would seem logical to ask why the problem exists or at least why the problem seems random. or is it random? It seems some here say they do not see clouding.

These are new style of design being a 2nd generation of Edge lite LED panels , Sharp had a big problems with the 1st gen edge lit LED models 2 years ago, so there are issues that will crop up in the process of any new manufacturing procedures . If one has clouding then speak-up & get a replacement Now. That would be the best way to proceed if one has an issue with these displays .

Remember that all the 70" panels last year were back lighted array , while not a full array like on the 80"ers

( Not a Full LED coverage back array is the reason that some 2011's 70'ers had slight darkening in the corners )

Gotcha, I'm not sure if it's my eyes ( I wear glasses, and my prescription is about 1.5 years old ) or not, but I seem to get cross talk on the middle ball in the sharp built in 3D demo. Tried with two pairs of the AN-DG20 glasses ( if that's the proper model ).

Could you share the GT5 settings once you get them? Thanks. Also, I found in the manual of the description for the different AquoMotion settings. Seems very interesting.

AquoMotion480: Turn the LED backlight on or off for 240Hz drive display.

AquoMotion240: Turn the LED backlight on or off for 120Hz drive display.

120Hz High/120Hz Low: For obtaining a clearer image.

Off: Normal Image.

Guys with the regular 847U, could you check it out and see what it says?

Could anyone help comment on this post I made on Page 14? After watching some more 3D, and some minor tweaks, I've gotten crosstalk down to be only noticeble in certain scenes if I look for it. But clouding in the dark scenes I can notice the uniformity easily

Also, is vyper drive removed from the 2012 series, or is there a menu option where I can access it.

This picture is just about half a stop more exagerated than reality.

Sorry if this has been covered, but has anyone used this as a full time PC or HTPC Monitor?

If so have there been any Burn In Issues? I'm considering a Sharp 70LE847U but not sure how much of a Leap it would be in PQ over my current Samsung 6767W DLP. The 6767W has Excellent Black levels & really good viewing angles How is the Viewings Most Important Burn-In is NA.

Thanks For Your Time

Just for the heck of it I e-mailed Sharp Customer Service and asked about the clouding issue and mentioned that some professional calibrators have turned off the Quad Pixel as well as using 120hz on the 847. Here is the response from Travis T.

The unit is calibrated straight from the factory and tested. However it is a personal customer preference if they wish to have the unit calibrated by a 3rd party. The Quatron technology using the 4th color would not be the cause of the clouding of the picture itself. Granted again that both the device and the TV may contribute to the issue with certain features, the feature that most likely cause the issue is the "Film Mode" feature under the "Advanced Picture" menu. This feature automatically detects a film-based source (originally encoded at 24 frames/second), analyzes it then recreates each still frame for high-definition picture quality. Turning the "Film Mode" off would let the signal source come through without alteration. I asked about the 745 vs 847. He responded, The only 2 differences is the Quatron 4th color and the 240hz Aquamotion.

There shouldn't be any burn in issues with the latest LCD panels. I've seen no dead pixels on mine, but there is clouding issues. It really depends on what you're using it for. For pure movie and 3D, I would suggest going elsewhere, but a great all around and natural color producing set, I would highly recommend the 847U.

edit: just saw that you want it as a full time PC and HTPC. For that, I see no reasons to not go with one, comparing this set to all the other sammy's I've seen, I enjoy the color on sharp's quattron panels much better. I'm simply not found of the overly saturated and blown highlights that some people like. I prefer natural colors and smooth gradients. ( Photographer )

Has anyone else experienced an audio issue where the audio cuts out when changing channels with an external STB on HDMI with these models? Running latest firmware, it's definitely the TV and not the STB. Changing the input on the TV to something else and back "fixes" the no audio, but it's highly annoying.

Edit: looks like Sharp website has 260U firmware, but auto update reports 253U is latest...

Edit2: Updated firmware via USB, will report back about audio issue in a week or two.
