This is the best approach, given Toshiba's tendency to carry over issues with these players between the generations.
Because these units are firmware upgradable Toshiba has shipped the product based on a manufacturing timeline, fixing issues or problems later through firmware updates. This is similar to Microsoft fixing Windows versions as they go along.
If a feature is important to you, best to wait until the product actually performs as you expect and not rely on a future upgrade that may never happen.

Robert has specifically stated that the XA2 will remain the flagship player from an up-conversion perspective for some time to come. So I am assuming he has seen the A35 perform.
I bought an XA2 based upon this comment because the idea of a getting a third gen player was very appealing to me, but the Reon processor is something I needed more.

Call Tosh CSR at 866-583-7353 they will tell you XA2 is being discontinued (or at least the one I talked to told me that) and it is being replaced with A35. Also they told me no guarantee that there will be a firmware upgrade for 24!
And no he has not seen A35 perform it is not available to any one yet. Unless his cousin works for Tosh HD DVD Dept!!!

I am on the same fence. XA2 Or A35? We know that Reon is "THE BOMB" to date..... Is Tosh trying to save some $ or will ABT give us AS GOOD AS if not better PQ? I would really like to see a professional review, side by side SIMELTANEOUS test to the same model 1080P LCD's. If anyone hears of 1, please start a new thread. I am sure many would be interested...

When the XA2 came out, didn't someone with a sdi modified player going into a video processor containing the ABT chip basically say that the XA2 looked better at upconversion? Would this be the same chip that's in the A35??
AND, does this even matter for some of us that use preamps? The new preamps that are being developed have their own video processing included.
In other words, the A35 is looking better to me.

This is completely wrong. The XA2 stays in the line up an dis the flagship player. I give you my 100% guaranty that we will have the 24p and HBR upgrade on the A20 and XA2.

The XA2 is a great machine. At a really great price now (vs $999. earlier in the year) And the 24p upgrade will raise it to a new level (for those who can utilize it). But I just can't bring myself to buy a machine that has been on the market for nearly 9 months. Seems a G3 model or even the Onkyo (even though based on the XA2 design) would be a better choice.

I've already read that the G3 players take about 35 seconds to boot up which is equivalent to the G2 machines. Did you get chance to have a play with them at CEDIA and if so were they any quicker at actually loading a disc and also in general operation? If they are quicker I may well go for the A30 for it's faster operation, but if they are essentially the same in operation as the G2 machines I may splash out on the XA2 for it's up conversionn abilities.

My my watch they are 7 seconds faster then their Gen 2 players.
