Hey guys,

Please let me start by saying THANK YOU to all those that helped me with my quest in finding a decent HTIB for $350 . I learned a lot of information and I truly appreciate all of your help.

Now, I am setting up the system and I am quite a bit low on cash from the holidays (I will keep things cheap this New Years Eve). I think that I need a set of speaker stands. I currently am using the base from my old Sony TV to hold my Samsung 42" Plasma. I'd like to replace the base, but I don't think that I can afford $100-$300 for a stand and still afford to buy a set of stands for the speakers. IIRC, Sears has a decent looking set of inexpensive stands for around $50 a pair. I know I saw them at Sears before Xmas, but when I just looked for them at the Sears website the ones that look familiar are linked to a Kmart website .

I have seen some over at Monoprice for about $25 (plus shipping) for a pair .

I am even thinking of getting a pair of these screw on stands to try them on the old TV Base that I am currently using. I wouldn't expect too much from a pair that is less then $10 shipped, but I figure if I am going to order 2 or 4 of the tall stands from Monoprice, why not spend another $10 or so (I'd think that the shipping wouldn't cost any more) and have a few more options. I really think that those screw in ones would be a bit to low for my taste, but they would a) get the speakers off of the floor, and b) keep me from having to worry that my Dog is going to knock a speaker and stand over and have it crash into my new TV.

I am sure that there are plenty of people here that know of decent speaker stands for an affordable price. Please share with me what you guys are using and if I really need to spend a lot more on stands or if cheaper ones will do just fine.

BTW: My TV is set up in a corner of my living room with my couch / love seat in another corner so that both of them have a decent viewing angle of the TV.

Thanks,

-Ken

BTW: I did a search since I figure that someone had to have started a discussion about speaker stands already. I couldn't find one. I found a ton of references about stands in existing threads, but they were really mostly mentioned in passing. I didn't see any recent threads exclusively about stands.

Mono price isn't bad... I have a brother inlaw that uses them all the time.

Thanks. I just loaded up a shopping cart with 4 of those tall speaker stands, 4 of those screw-in wall speaker brackets (I would most likely only need 2 of them, but I mis-read the price before and they are less then $5 a pair), 100 ft of 14ga speaker wire, a 5ft HDMI cable and a 3ft Optical cable and it comes out to $70 plus $27 S+H. For $97.30 shipped, I am ready to pull the trigger. I was just hoping that someone could enlighten me if I really needed better stands.

Just figured that I would post an update....

I got 2 pair of the Black SS-01's from Monoprice. They cost a whopping $13.50 a pair since I bought 2 pair. Of course, shipping costs add a bit, but I am placing one big order. I added 2 pair of the black wall mounting speaker brackets as well . They added a whopping $4.09 a pair when you buy 2 pair. I am hoping not to need those wall mounting brackets, but I figured that for $8 more I'd get them and have them ready to go the first time I see that the dog / kids / wife knock over a speaker & stand. The way that my TV is caddy-cornered in the corner of the Living room, I cant see that I would actually mount them to a wall. I am hoping that I attach them to the TV stand if need be.

I picked up a 100' roll of 14 gauge speaker wire. I understand that I could have gotten away with 16 gauge since I am not going to run it further then 50'. But in the same statement it was pointed out that some people use the 14 gauge for peace of mind. Hey, for another 7 or 8 bucks for the 100' roll, I'm a sport. I added in a few cables and totaled up about $75 in items and $27 in shipping. Not cheap, but not really expensive either. Had I spent $40 or more likely $50 for each pair of speaker stands locally, it would have worked out pretty close to the same money.

Next up, I spent $80 on a TV stand today. I looked around online for what most of my local stores would have (Circuit City, Best Buy, Ikea, and some furniture places, etc). I like the look of the Z-Line 40" stand (a bargain at $65), but no stores near me have it. That worked out fine for me since I found this Phase 41" TV stand at Target . It's on sale for $80 right now and it has (2) shelves as well as the base of the unit for components (some stands only have one shelf while others leave the floor section open with legs instead of a base).

I should stress that I was not looking for a piece of furniture ($300 and up). I just want a stand that holds some stuff, looks nice, and was pretty solid. While I like a lot of things about it (the glass shelves are thicker then some that I have seen (the thin ones seem to bow a bit)). Also, the material isn't as flimsy as some that I looked at (it is thicker then some of the much more expensive units I saw). I am not thrilled with everything about this unit since I'd like the shelf span to be a bit wider and I'd like the 'L' shaped supports to be useful (I am planning to put a rack in there for DVD or CD cases). I won't feel too bad when I start to customize this stand a bit. Don't get me wrong, I am not a butcher, but I have to admit that if it was a $300 piece of furniture I'd be more reluctant to start modifying it. I am already starting to look for cheap racks or stands for DVDs and CDs so I can strip them and fit the parts in the inside corner sections of the 'L' supports and have easy access for my kids to games and music while cleaning up some clutter in the living room at the same time.

Anyway, I figured that I would post this information here with some links to some rather affordable items. I hadn't found any threads with inexpensive items (or even expensive items) when I did a search before starting this thread.

BTW: If someone knows where I can find something like this wire DVD rack that I can cut up and modify to fit within my stand, please let me know. I would rather buy the pieces rather then the completed product.
