As some of you know we have now created an HDTV Records section. At the same time, we created an HDTV Catagory itself here on AVS Forum. So...I submit this question....

Seeing we have an HDTV catagory...Can you offer suggestions on how to break up this area (this Hardware forum) any further. Like, I see a lot of tower or station talk...maybe that area?

Anyways...suggestions if any please?

NOTE: We are just looking to add one or two more areas.

Thank you.

Possible HDTV subcategories:

HDTV - Terrestrial

HDTV - Satellite

(Though they are a bit intertwined since both DirecTV and Echostar offer satellite/terrestrial receivers.)

Perhaps hardware subcatgories:

HDTV - Displays

HDTV - Receivers

HDTV - Antennas/Reception issues

Could help a lot if all antenna problem stuff was separate in one place.

Maybe even split into:

indoor antennas only

regular outdoor

super-fringe and towers

handling bad multipath

cables, preamps, couplers, and accessories

specific locations or station groups like: Boston area, LA, NY, NJ

There are several threads on tower issues but there are many more on STB's....and they're scattered all over. I think a forum just for these puppies is warranted. Here's my 2 cents:

HDTV Receivers (Satellite and/or OTA) and Reception

HDTV Displays (and/or "whats the best TV")

HDTV Recorders

HDTV Programming

HDTV Issues (i.e. copy protection, tower delays, etc...)

OTA could be broken off into its own Hardware group. This would include towers, antennas, amplifiers, cabling, and the OTA side of receivers etc. Typically members don't post about satelite and OTA in the same thread were receivers are concerned.

receivers

other hardware

OTA issues

satellite issues

antennas

Judging fromm the redundant questions it would also be helpful to have a beginners FAQ.

BTW. Good Job!

How about Digital HDTV DXing!!!

It would be a fun way to see who get the most distant TV station's signal being pulled in by Tropo ducting or via E-Skip or even rarer F-2 layer skip!!

I don't see much use in separating OTA from satellite since most folks have or at least are considering both, and besides then you get into a matrix of the above categories for OTA and satellite.

I think breaking up the forum into too-narrow subjects will make it very hard (and time consuming) to browse. Also there may not be a clear demarcation between those subjects and eventually people will cross post everywhere and defeat the original purpose of breaking up the forum.

May I suggest simple categories such as:

HDTV Hardware (non display) - STB, receiver, satellite, OTA, antenna, dish

HDTV Display

HDTV Programming

HDTV Talk Soup - technology, legal issues, copy protection, future, FAQ

Just my .02..

I agree with the above

David,

You are a tease. You did this poll before.

I would vote for a new section on OTA/Antennas

You would catch local station issues, tower talk (which is more than tower talk), and antennas.

I agree with sentiment that splitting up too finely makes it more difficult to take it all in.

I vote for Dagman's setup:

You already have sections that cover most display technologies. Do they even still make non-HDTV projectors?

Adding an OTA/Antennas section seems the next logical step...

Under HDTV Hardware, I would like to see additional subcategories, like TV manuf, then models. Also with STB's, a seperate area for each manufacturer like E* and D*.

Please move the HDTV categories to the top of the main menu. HDTV should be the first thing everone sees when entering the forum selection area. All newbies should be subjected to seing HDTV before they go on to the forum that interests them.

Just my thought,

I agree with CZ Eddie. Move HDTV to the top. I would prefer that the HDTV sections not be split any further. It is too difficult to read.

Just to stop one thing right here...The HDTV catagory will not be moved to the top of the forum.

Smaller number of forums is what we are seeking...Thus only one or two more HD areas may open. What I am saying is, we will not have all types of HDTV sections. Too confussing.
