Old Projector Aspect Ratio Adjustment?

I've got an older model Sony 1041Q (non-data grade/ low scan rate) projector that I'd like to keep for a while longer. Is there any way to set this thing up with an external "box"/device ( read, "cheap box/device")to allow me to alternate pictures aspect ratios from 4:3 to 16:9 on to the same 16:9 screen? That is, have a full 16: 9 screen and have 4:3 images projected in center, masking the sides when used as such?
