With the next-generation HD-DVD and/or Blu-Ray discs on the way, I'm wondering what older TV shows might possibly appear in high resolution (Not shows that can now be seen in high-def like CSI, Enterprise, etc.). There are a number of TV shows I would like to purchase now on DVD but the cost is far too prohibitive to get a complete set of TV shows in both DVD and later on in high-definition. (For this reason I now am limiting the number of DVD movies I purchase) So can anyone help me out?

I will be very surprised if the old shows look any better in the next generation than the look on DVD. Even if shot on film, the production values and quality just aren't there. I watch a lot of these old shows, and, to me, DVD's already exceed the quality of the material.

In fact, when people worry about buying more movies on DVD since HD is coming, the think I suggest they buy is old TV-shows.

I disagree. While some shows have been poorly taken care of, there is still a lot of room for improved picture with so much less compression and a lot more resolution than DVD can provide. Even film masters that have some dust and scratch damage will still benefit from a higher quality transfer.

The real question, though, is whether many of those shows will actually be released on an HD format. The studios are pumping out those sets like gumballs and taking in around $40-$50 a pop on average, with some being much more. They may simply not see the market to release them all over again for the few that would want to lay down that kind of money twice.

Movies are one thing (and much less money to double dip), but I think TV series on Blue Ray, etc. will probably mostly be researved for those actually shot for that format. Sure, you might see a few exceptions among the most popular shows, but I'd wager on it being a long time.

Here's a post from Stephen R. Pickard over on the Bernard Herrmann discussion forum:

"Thank you for your enquiry with regard to my involvement with "The Twilight Zone". The entire five seasons of the original classic tv series is at present going through a complete overhaul. Image Entertainment and CBS are collaborating to bring to the dvd buying public the best presentation possible of this much-loved series.

To achieve this, CBS have spent much time and effort to provide the finest picture and sound source materials.

The original 35mm camera negatives are being utilised, probably for the first time in forty years, and are presently in the process of being mastered in high definition. These negatives were found to be in pristine condition and are achieving jaw-dropping results. Every effort is being made during the telecine process to avoid any video clean-up gimmicks in order to achieve the most film-like look possible, to complement the fine photography. The original 1.33:1 aspect ratio is being preserved within the High-Definition 16x9 format and excessive cropping or overscan is avoided so that as much of the frame as possible will be seen. The finished dvd will be what is called a '4x3 down conversion' made directly from the high-def master.

The Hi-def masters will hopefully be seen in all their glory when the technology permits.

The audio is largely being derived from magnetic source materials which will result in a more transparent and pleasing listening experience and, as mentioned above relating to the video, avoids any clean-up gimmicks which would disfigure the original analog presentation.

We hope to provide as many isolated scores as possible.

The first complete season will be available at the end of the year and the remaining seasons will become available in 2005."

HDNET has run episodes of "Hogan's Heroes" in high definition and the qualitiy is excellent. Anything shot on 35mm is going to look great provided they can find a clean negative.

It's always a good idea to read previous posts before posting a question, especially when a post 2 above yours has all the information.

To answer your question, though, it's the original series and the first season should be out by the end of the year.
