Oldboy on HD DVD - anybody buy it?

1362 Views 14 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Mike Lindberg
I kind of doubt I'll see much response, but has anybody picked up the Oldboy HD DVD from Japan? http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=TDHY-9005

Any reports on what it looks like? No English subtitles, but I'm hoping some Korean/Japanese speakers picked it up. I can't find anything about it beyond press releases in Korean, and I can't speak enough Japanese to search for reviews on Japanese sites.

I was incredibly excited about this release when I first heard about it, then I read that it wouldnt have English subs. What a disappointment. For me, I'd much rather have this flick in HD-DVD than Equalibrium.
It's a release like this that makes me want to bash my head against the wall over the fact that the DVD forum would add to the spec the ability to use additional subtitle streams that aren't on the disk, but limit them to official sources, as in from the studios server over the internet. I mean, why the hell can't I take a subtitle file I've ripped from my dvd onto my computer and stream it to my A1 over the network connection?
I have it on order, should be here early next week. I'll report back then if you're interested.

And affirmative to the subtitle concerns, I've been wondering that ever since the feature cropped up in discussions. There's usually a reason why the studios don't put them on there in the first place, licensing being a prominent factor among others. If they are the only ones who can make the additional subs available it may just defeat the purpose: if they wanted them available they would have put them on there in the first place. The optimist in me is hoping they won't all be locked in tight by business politics, but the realist in me tells me subtitles have been a big factor in practical regionalisation of DVD internationally. I'll have to make do reading the Japanese subs in this case, which isn't nearly as comfortable as reading them in English yet. Oh well....
If you could also check for Korean subtitles, that'd be great. I don't expect them, but it'd be nice to have them. My Korean isn't perfect yet.

Also, for Korean movie fans, it looks like Volcano High and A Bittersweet Life are coming out (or are out) in Japan on HD DVD. Now if only they'd release HD DVD officially over here...

That's awesome. Bittersweet Life is great. I'm really tempted to get this. Volcano would be a nice visual treat too.
DAMN!!! I would absolutely love to have Bittersweet LIfe on HD DVD. All I ask for is English subs......plz! (I know, I know not gonna happen)
I've got my fingers crossed for English subs when Korea launches HD-DVD.

Not going to happen any time soon: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=721676
Liersi, any update on the title?
Not received it yet. Amazon and DHL tag-teamed the delivery into not one, but two mess-ups, resulting in delays. Drop-off is scheduled for monday now, but the other team still has the ball. Don't worry, I haven't forgotten and will definitely report back when I can.
Alright, had a chance to at least look at it last night (but not to watch it in its entirety...). This is most certainly one for the "how it looked theatrically" crowd, and should prove a tough sale for anyone expecting three dimensional sharpness in every frame. The encode very accurately captures the look of the film: often a little soft, diffusely lit, varying degrees of grain and overexposure - it's all there. Anyone expecting this to look like Tokyo Drift or Batman Begins will be sorely disappointed. The disc is a clear step up in every way from the DVDs, as those had a very hard time reproducing the peculiarities of the look without artifacts (grain became noise, EE). Detail is greatly improved, but is nowhere near what you may expect given some of the more impressive titles on the format. I threw in the DVD afterwards and that looked worse than I remembered, not matching the detail and color of this presentation by a long shot. Audio sounded very much similar to what I knew from the korean DVDs, including instances of clipping.

There' s a variety of extras offered, including a commentary, making of, deleted scenes and trailers. All accessible via a rather cumbersome menu system.

Conclusion: disc accurately captures the material it was taken from, offering a step up from the DVD in all respects without being impressive in terms of the new format. I saw no problems related to the encode itself, further corroborating the assumption that the limitations are in the master and the original look and sound of the film.

And no English subs, right?
No, unfortunately not. Japanese subtitles only.
I figured this wouldn't be a "reference" title, considering how manipulated the original DVD looked, which was apparently overlooked by the director. About what I expected, and I'll probably pick it up when I get my player.
